Currently Loving: L’Oreal HIP Kohl Eyeliner

I’m kind of a dunce when it comes to any eyeliner that’s not shaped like a pencil.  Liquid liner?  Forget it.  I might as well grab a Sharpie and draw all over my eyelid.  I was afraid with the shape of the new L’Oréal HIP Kohl Eyeliner I was going to have the same issue.  Contraire, ma soeur!  The tip applicator is just stiff enough not to make a mess and provides the control my wacky right hand lacks.  If you’re all thumbs like me, or just not very skilled in the art of liquid liner this may be for you.  I’ve got this in #803 Brown Kohl and it’s just dark enough, but not as harsh as black can be on the eye.  It’s available in 6 colors but there’s a really hot iridescent gold color available too, I have to check that one out next!

Thanks for reviewing this! A few questions for you: What’s the staying power like and does it actually look like a liquid liner when it’s on the eyes or does it look more like a pencil? Thanks!!

I got this one in the Plum color – which is really pretty, but I was spooked to use it. I can’t line the upper water line at all, so I thought I would try this, without getting all spendy with the Guerlain. I learned how to do it from this: http://is.gd/lmU5 and sure enough, the first time I tried it looked nifty, even with a bit of cat eye at the end. Yay!

Hey gals!

Recessionista, I would say it’s like a hybrid of pencil and liquid liner. Not as pigmented as a liquid, but more than a pencil. I think the Kohl liner would work great with a waterproof sealant too for even more staying power! It stays longer than pencils for me, but can give the appearance of the precision of a liquid… hope that makes sense! Sometimes liquids look like really hard lines and the kohl had a softer line.

Paula, OOH! Plum! I love plum because it brings out the green in my eyes. That You Tube link is super helpful! Thanks for sharing that with me and I’m sure other readers appreciate it as well!

Thanks for the quick reply, Amber! It sounds like this may give my beloved Revlon Color Stay liner a run for its money as it sounds like the best of both worlds (better staying power than a pencil but not as harsh of a look as a liquid). Can’t wait to try it!!

Hi Amber! So I went to Rite-Aid yesterday to pick this up, but I noticed that the few remaining on the shelf looked like they had already been opened. I opened one and found gunk all around the rim. Can you tell me if there was a safety seal on yours? Maybe the ones at my Rite-Aid all had their safety seals removed? Thanks :)

I just bought this in the brown and the teal! Love it! The only problem is that it tends to migrate from my waterline to the bottom of my eyelid, which isn’t too attractive, especially when you’re wearing the teal! I can’t wait to get the purple next!

Hi Danielle!

Oh no! What a bummer… sorry to hear that :)

Hi Recessionista,

Thanks for coming back to ask about that. Mine didn’t have a seal on it either… so I don’t think they do. I think it’s so crappy when people open products up in the store because it puts everyone’s eyes at risk to infection and renders the product worthless when we want to buy it. I used to work in a major cosmetics retailer and eventhough we had testers for everything, people STILL opened up the products, GRRR! If you’re in doubt, I would go take it to their manager and voice your concern. I would ask if they have any backstock you could exchange it from. Depending on their management style, you’re either going to get someone super accommodating or someone who just shines you on. I personally won’t stand for that and escalate things until they give me the service I deserve. We all deserve it, we earned our money and should have rights! (lookie! I’m going off on a tangent!!!) The rim was clean too and was sealed very tightly. Gah… let this stand as a vent to the world, stop opening up the products!!! ;)

Hi Amber,

I am TOTALLY right there with you. The most frustrating thing to me is when there are only 2 or 3 units of a particular product on the shelf, and all 3 units have been tampered with. Argh! But thank you so much for the tip–I never thought to ask a manager about checking to see if there’s backstock. What a fantastic idea, and one that I will surely use in the future. Thanks so much!

My quest for this kohl eyeliner continues…
