Best of Summer: Self-tanning lotions

by Amber on June 11, 2009

in product reviews,self-tanner

In lieu of my regular self-tanning regime, I’ve been “suffering for beauty” this week.  Well, if you want to call it that!   My ghost-girl legs have been the battleground for rigorous testing– all in different areas so I could decide how a few self-tanners rank that I tried.  It’s summer, a girl’s gotta tan… I’ll resume back to my Celtic self in September, thank you very much!  If I were in an accident, the doctors and nurses would surely be testing me for some other illness considering how many test patches I’ve got going on.  Don’t worry– you don’t have to undergo this kind of embarrassment, I’ve saved you the trouble!

1. Bella Bronze Golden Chamomile & Goats Milk Self-Tanner — I’ve heard really great things about this bronzer so I was anticipating trying Bella Bronze when it arrived in my BeautyFix kit last month.  It starts out as a cream and melts right into the skin, the DHA scent is somewhat there but not nearly as bad as some others I’ve tried in the past!  In a few hours this delivered a believable bronze, I like that it focuses more on the skincare aspect as far as a self-tanner goes with it’s ingredients.

2. Tarte CelluFIGHT — CelluFIGHT has clinical cellulite-fighting results that are pretty darn impressive.  “A 55% decrease in storage of harmful fat cells in the dermis after 8 weeks” is a big claim to make so only time will tell but I’m willing to be the guinea pig.  It’s quite possibly the best smelling self-tanner I’ve ever tried.  Geez Tarte!  Will you make a new fragrance out of that scent for me?  This developed the fastest on my skin with a slight glow starting after about an hour, but will continue to darken with a few more uses during the week.  This is another one that thinks it’s a skincare product!

3. Lancome Flash Bronzer — Flash Bronzer is really creamy and packed with Vitamin E, so it feels great on the skin and the color develops incredibly fast.  I used this for an entire week and I have to say the staying power of the color hangs in there when you think you just could not stretch it any further!  I was that happy with the color without any second reapplication of the product during the week because it was sufficient the first go around.

4. Elizabeth Grant Soleil Smart Body Bronzer – I’ve decided that this one has a brain!  It’s almost like it knew what color would be best for me… I know I’ve tried some where the color looks the same on me as it would the girl-next-door.  Soleil Smart worked it’s magic in about 2 hours and stopped at the perfect shade and tone.  It has more of a gel consistency when you apply it so it’s a point of difference if you have a preference.

5. Sun Sauce Moisturizer with Touch of Sunless — Sun Sauce is another one that smells great, I noticed that right off the bat and went to town.  This is a gradual tanner so it’s very believable, you can control the color with every use– which is something I’m a fan of.  This is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to faux tan but wants to take their time getting there.  It’s fab to use at night before bed.

Check out how other self-tanning products ranked with these reviews!

The things we do for beauty! Thanks for risking some orange patchwork on yourself for the greater good! Great notes and that Tarte product sounds wonderful! Working on a tan while fighting cellulite, what could be better?!
