Let’s face it, matte polish is going to be huge for Fall, whether we want to like it or not! There are a few downsides to it. I’ve read that matte polishes don’t wear long at all, and you can’t use a top coat, boo! I’ve read several less than flattering reviews for those very reasons, but for the most part– the idea is cool. It’s on the edge and very, very fashion forward! We’re also limited to the matte shades that the brands have decided to release this Fall but Essie has made it no problem at all with Matte About You, a matte finishing top coat that you can place on top of any nail polish shade and rock the trend with unlimited choices!

This is a great idea for anyone who wants to try the trend but doesn’t want to shell out full price for just one polish. Why not take an existing nail polish you have and make it matte, or buy the regular colors you crave and have the choice to wear them matte or regular? Pretty darn sweet idea for $10.
Here are a few of my favorite regular Essie shades with Matte About You as the top coat:

I would imagine that since it’s not recommended to wear a top coat with other pre-existing matte polishes, your Essie Matte About You adorned nails will last a little longer since it’s actually a top coat and you can wear a base coat with this as well. Score! Base coat, 2 coats of your favorite polish, and a coat of this matte finisher and you’re in matte business with the best of them! As far as the matte trend goes, this may be the way to go so you won’t be stuck with an arsenal of matte polishes you might not wear again once you’re over it. Way to go Essie. I’ve always been mad about you!

I hate that the matte polishes are here to stay. But I have to admit, the idea of matte top coat is kinda cool. The fact that one swipe of it can turn any polishes I already own into a new, frosty color, has already won me over. I’m not ready for matte just yet, so I’ll take the plunge for the topcoat once I am. Thanks for the review!
Heya Sarah
I think matte will be in for Fall and early Winter– and I could be wrong! But I do like the idea of making my own polishes matte. I don’t think I’ll be shelling out big bucks for several matte polishes when next year I might ask myself what the heck I was even thinking?!

I really like this review and your swatches, this one purchase of Essie is much more appealing then having to buy all new polishes to add some trendiness to your life.
Cool Leane, I’m so glad you found it helpful hun! I agree, this one little bottle will breathe new life into your existing colors and into the regular Fall shades you pick up that aren’t matte. That way you won’t sigh over how much money you spent on just matte polishes once the trend is over!

I just stumbled upon this site…when I was trying to find ways to make matte nail polishes last.
But I did get the Essie Matte About You top coat and am loving it so far! I put it on top of black nail polish and it makes it look like black rubber! It looks very cool and I even like it more than the shiny glossy top coat that nail polishes naturally have. I did the base coat first, then two coats of Essie Licorice nail polish and the Matte About You as a top coat. It looks amazing and I do recommend this product to anyone that is ready for matte nail colors!
Hi Tisaya,
YAY! I agree, it’s a fun way to change things up without a committment and Licorice with the matte top coat sounds awesome! Now I want to go play…
