Review: Smashbox High Definition Concealer

I’ve reviewed some excellent heavy duty concealers, but how about a medium-to-heavy duty concealer?  We want options, because DUH… we’re like that.  We’re beautiful creatures with fickle minds sometimes, at least I am! *wink wink*  A perfect candidate for this task was the Smashbox High Definition Concealer.  Since it’s considered high-def, you would think it would have to get the job done without being overly thick and too yellow for me.  And be able to conceal all the redness around my nose.  And be able to cover my monthly monstrous zit courtesy of Mother Nature herself.  And… and… okay, I think if I go any further I will be pressing my luck.  I don’t ask for much in life but please let my makeup perform, that stuff is not cheap.

First, I want to put this out there in the grand Universe, the following picture is not exactly pretty.  I woke up the other morning with the usual redness around my nose due to the broken capillaries I’ve had for a majority of my life.  My Mom says I had a TON of nosebleeds in my youth due to my veins always being so close to the surface and once I even asked a dermatologist about this in my 20′s, and she told me BINGO SISTER– that will do it!  But again, thanks Mom for fine genetics!  OH!  And my zit-gift from Mother Nature was happily staking it’s claim during photo time, how thoughtful of her.

This photo has not been altered other than a re-size and a lovely magnification where you can see my brave exhibition of morning U-G-L-Y, so please be kind.  I really tried to zoom in so that you could see the bane of my existence:

Yeah, don’t say I didn’t warn you.  But can we agree on something?  Aside from a little gathering on the dry skin on the monster in question, it did a remarkable job prior to even applying foundation which would further make this issue detectable throughout the day had I not used the Smashbox High Definition Concealer at all.  I didn’t find that it packed my pores but that it created a light-diffusing veil over them in attempt to minimize their depth.  Woo hoo!  Thank you very, very much.  It pretty much can act like a primer too in the areas you’ve applied it, so I didn’t feel the need to start layering scads of products on my face to look ready to face the day unscathed.  This is in a teeny tiny tube, but for good reason.  You cannot just go to town with this baby because it is so pigmented– but not as much as some of the others I’ve reviewed.  It’s texture made it easy to build where I needed the most with a gentle tapping motion with a clean fingertip (I prefer my ring finger).  Keep in mind, the more you tap and try to rub, your redness will likely become even more noticeable so err on the side of caution if I could give just a little advice.  A little should be enough to make you happy.  After a little eye cream too, it concealed darkness under my eyes since a few of my veins are also close to the surface there.  All in all, this concealer gets massive love from me!  Kisses Smashbox.

    Heya Kelly!

I’m stoked that you like this one too! It’s definitely a power-concealer, no doubt ;) As you can tell, it does a bang-up job for me and I’m so glad it worked for you as well.

You are very welcome my dear Kris… enjoy! This one should be okay under your eyes too ;) I know we have issues with that sometimes! For $18, it’s excellent– I’ve paid WAY more for less quality.

well…i have a problem with concealer looking cakey. Especially with blemishes, they tend to be dry because of the medicine i put on them to get rid of them. i have even tried primer on top so it will look smoother nad it does not help…does this make skin look smooth even on blemishes???

Hi Kayl, you have a really good question! Due to the amount of pigment in this, it’s hard for me to say. Typically, even the best of concealers will show more over dry skin…so this might not be an answer for your problem. If you’re able to exfoliate some of the dryness off, I don’t see why you couldn’t use it ;)
