Review & Swatches: COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick

There’s been some excitement over COVERGIRL’s new lipstick formula, Lip Perfection Lipstick is all set for release in January 2011.  I had a chance to try it out a little bit early, and I’m ready to share it with you!

A collision of color and moisture has created perfection for lips.  In a single stroke, lips are enhanced with rich, rewarding color and in just 7 days, the silk therapy moisturizers help transform lips to their smoothest and most luscious.

I say:

  • These are very emollient and glide across the lip without any snagging.  The color applies evenly and the color payoff for the price (about $6.99) is quite remarkable when compared to other lipstick formulas in the same price range.
  • They feel very creamy/buttery and don’t leave the lips dry.  They’re not waxy at all.
  • I like that there’s minimal fragrance.  There is however a slight scent that I just refer to as “lipstick smell”.  While it’s nothing out of the ordinary, I wanted to point out that it’s less perfume-y than other brands I’ve tried.
  • The lipstick tube itself is a little more on the luxe side, in contrast to the current COVERGIRL Continuous Color packaging.  Lip Perfection also displays a fairly accurate portrayal of the shade you are buying on the end of the tube. (This reminds me of the old Max Factor Vivid Impact Lip Color that can no longer be purchased in the U.S.)
  • I’ve only tried three of the 44 shades, but it sounds like there will be something for everyone with a good mix of browns, mauves, burgundies, nudes, lilacs, corals, roses, and reds.  I can’t wait to see the full range.

Darling, Sweetheart, and Rapture:

When it comes to the 7 day claim that Lip Perfection will transform the smoothness of your lips, here are my thoughts: I believe that if you change your lip color/lip balm habit for 7 days with any brand—you’re going to see either a welcome or an unwelcome result.  If I wear matte lipstick for 7 days and then switch to Lip Perfection, I’m going to be pleased as punch with how my lips feel.  If I’m not wearing lip balm for a month and then I start wearing it for 7 consecutive days, I’m going to be thrilled with the result.  So while I’m not discrediting Lip Perfection’s 7-day claim—I’m saying it’s all in how you look at it; is the glass half empty, or half full?  In all honesty, the formula absolutely is hydrating and moist, there’s no denying that!  It has shea, avocado, aloe, and silk proteins doing the dirty work, and those ingredients are indeed effective.  But I just wanted to point out that the 7-day efficacy is really in how you look at things.  In my opinion, with the feel and color payoff—Lip Perfection is a great drugstore deal and I do recommend checking the shades out once they launch.

EDITED TO ADD: Since this original post, I have participated in a 7 Day COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lip Transformation Challenge, be sure to check it out! (There are swatches of all 44 shades on Day 7)

I do like the color payoff. However, this is the exact same ingredients as their old lipstick and the same formula as the Max Factor Color Perfection. They even sold 44 shades and now covergirl lip perfection in 44 shades, the same name, and the same ingredients??? I feel like they did not even try. They just repackaged it. I like package because it does match what is in the tube.

    Hi BeautyGirl!

I didn’t receive any of the blister packaging with my samples, so I didn’t have a peek at every ingredient at first and I honestly didn’t even think to do an ingredient comparison with Max Factor—good call!

After looking into it, it’s definitely not a match for the CG Continuous Color formula for sure based off of texture and payoff alone. It doesn’t match up to Max Factor Color Perfection either (based off of the ingredients I can find online), however—it is somewhat close to Max Factor’s Vivid Impact. (No longer available in the U.S.) Not every ingredient is mimicked, but several are. Unfortunately I can’t locate a MF Vivid Impact lipstick in my stash right now to do a feel comparison, I know I have several and it’s driving me nuts now. As far as the 44 shades, I don’t think they’ll be the same and that theory is based off of the preliminary info I have. But it’s hard to tell since I personally won’t be able to check for dupes from the MF line. I wouldn’t be surprised if the colors were “inspired” by the MF line however 😉 Please let me know if you find anything out!

I have to admit, I’ve been turned off lipstick for the last several years (the waxy texture, I think). I’m definitely a gloss girl. However I would go for a lipstick if it’s the perfect neutral pink shade I’ve been searching for forever and had a nice texture. I may check these out. I hate to waste money though!

  • Harlie

those last 2 colors look fantastic! are they frosty at all? i was told that most of the lipsticks from this formula are frosty and i’d hate for that to be the case :( i know the first one is, but it doesn’t look like the other 2 are

  • Amber

Hi Harlie! Darling & Rapture have a little bit of a pearl quality to them, but they are much more creamy looking than the frosts for sure. I think for those two that it adds more shine than frost, and it’s pretty subtle. If you check them out, please make sure to let us know how you like them!

Hi Amber! Just wondering how you found the wear on this lipstick.

  • Harshleen

Sweetheart looks really pretty in your swatch…..I like the packaging too! thanks for the nice review.

There is FINALLY an answer to this LipPerfection/Max Factor debate, and I wanted to share the final word with you, directly from COVERGIRL. I had a chance to personally speak with Dr. Sarah Vickery, Senior Scientist at P&G at an event (where I asked her face-to-face), and she assured me that they are indeed NOT the same formula.

Later, as a follow-up via email—here is the response I received:

“A key difference in the two formulas, besides the shade palettes, is that LipPerfection contains a silk therapy complex specifically designed to improve lip condition. One of the key ingredients in the complex is squalane, which is an olive oil derived emollient. The squalane and the silk protein help retain moisture in the lips so they look and feel softer and smoother.” – Dr. Sarah Vickery

And that settles it :) COVERGIRL LipPerfection and Max Factor’s Vivid Impact are two totally different formulas. I hope that helps everyone!
