Review & Swatches: OPI Shatter Nail Polishes in 3 New Blue Hues

Since the release of Black Shatter earlier this year, OPI has been on a roll—cranking out their crackling-effect polishes in several new colors. Most recently, the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Collection launched a Silver Shatter, while the latest in the Glam Slam! France Collection from Serena Williams debuted both a Red Shatter and a White Shatter. It looks like this instant nail art trend is still going very strong, because we have three new blue Shatters from OPI, as an expansion of the Shatter Collection.

Black Shatter was received with great fanfare, showing that women are looking for new ways to express themselves and are excited to try different textures on their nails,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “By adding a variety of colors to the line, there are more options for every woman, whether she is looking for a funky aquamarine or elegant deep blue. Unlike traditional nail art which can be complicated and difficult to replicate, Shatter is easy to use and allows everyone to experiment with this new trend.”

And here we go with swatches of all three of the new shatters paired up with some of my favorite OPI shades:

Turquoise Shatter is a nice and vibrant shimmer. When I paired it up with the chartreuse green of Simply Smashing!, I thought it gave a fantastic peacock feather-like effect!

Blue Shatter is a stunning cobalt blue that will look great up against just about anything, but I decided to pair it up with Skull & Glossbones so that the blue could really take center stage up against a pale background. Blue Shatter also has a shimmer effect.

Navy Shatter is a little more on the opaque side and doesn’t really have any shimmer to it, so I think it might look best with shimmery shades, or very bright ones peeking out from underneath. I paired it up with Lucerne-Tainly Look Marvelous for this multi-dimensional look. But what I do like about Navy Shatter is that it still has a glossy factor and doesn’t appear to be flat, it still has life to it.

OPI also adds:

Inspired by graffiti art, Shatter leaves behind a crackled, two-texture finish when painted over any dry OPI hue. Adding top coat takes Shatter from matte to glossy in seconds.

And I agree! Adding a top coat is key with these babies, and you’ll see what new life it breathes into these shades once it’s applied.

Price & Availability: Blue Shatter, Navy Shatter, and Turquoise Shatter will be available beginning May 2011 at Professional Salons, including Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, JCPenney, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret, and ULTA, for $8.50 ($10.95 CAN) suggested retail for each Shatter coat.

Will you be seeking out any of the new Shatter hues? If I had to pick just one…I wouldn’t miss Turquoise, but man! Blue (cobalt) would be a VERY close second!

I like the turquoise!!! I bought my 1st shatter polish yesterday, but haven’t had the chance to try it yet. Unfortunately, it wasn’t OPI, and I’m an OPI fangirl!

I love the turquoise color, but can’t really seem to get on board with the whole “shatter look.” I wonder if they have a non-shatter turquoise or one similar?

    Hi Maureen,

I know there was a pretty turquoise in the Texas Collection…but I don’t think it was as vibrant as the shatter shade. I’ll have to do some recon. I’ll let you know if I come up with anything!
