If you haven’t noticed the COVERGIRL NatureLuxe frenzy yet, just wait until this new addition to the NatureLuxe lineup has its wide-release in drugstores next month! If it’s as well-received as its sister products in the recent past, the roar will be pretty hard to ignore. Late last year, I shared my first impressions of the line—which at the time, consisted of NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation, and NatureLuxe Gloss Balm. COVERGIRL has introduced the NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara to help complete a more “au naturel” look, with less synthetic ingredients to mirror the rest of the line. I had a chance to try it out, and I wanted to share what I think…
What makes it a little different…
While NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara is not an all-natural product, COVERGIRL has swapped out some of the synthetic ingredients commonly found in mascara, to give the product a lighter look and feel. By incorporating naturally-derived ingredients like beeswax, tapioca polymers, and carnauba wax—they hope to deliver a more luxurious product that performs just as well more costly products, but with a “luxury touched by nature” feel.
Let’s take a look at the brush…
The brush resembles what I believe to be one that’s very similar to many on the mass market today. Nothing that’s over-the-top or radically different (no gimmicky monstrous brush here), but notice how the bristles are in close pairs—that typically helps to result in natural-looking volume. A tapered tip like this one helps make it easy to maneuver in both the inner and outside corners for even application. The bristles are flexible, so they can coat the lashes pretty evenly with ease.
Application…
While applying NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara, I appreciate that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to get it right. You know how with some mascaras, you’re left building and separating for a bit to make it look the way you’d like? With this one, I found it pretty effortless to just swipe on a few times, almost mindlessly—because it was nice and clean, without clumping or flaking. I also noticed that it lacks that synthetic “plastic-y” scent as I commonly call it, and instead it smells pleasant—almost sweet—like honey. I found that pretty interesting!
Formula…
It’s kind of hard to tell exactly how this is a mousse formula—but I guess I would call it a mousse by taking how it looks and feels on my lashes into consideration, it’s very lightweight. COVERGIRL states that the mousse formula is “20% lighter than the most expensive volume mascara”, and even though I have no way to quantify that (nor do I know which super secret mascara they’re talking about), I could see how this formula is a little different than your typical mascara formula. When I feel most others—they are almost tacky (as in sticky), or very dry. NatureLuxe actually feels creamy on my fingertips in contrast. So I can understand why they’re calling it “Mousse Mascara”, fair enough to me on that note.
Performance…
NatureLuxe delivers a very believable, natural-looking, clean volume. I don’t believe it was meant to deliver outrageous volume (and I think it lacks the synthetic polymers and fibers to achieve that), so if that’s what you’re in the market for—this probably won’t be for you. What I really like about it is how it makes my lashes look light and fluttery, but still well-defined without looking fake. My lashes (like myself) have many moods! I don’t want crazy volume, or a falsie-look every day. Variety is the spice of life! My lashes don’t feel crispy or heavy with NatureLuxe, another plus.
Available in four shades (and in both regular and water-resistant formulas), I’m wearing Very Black in the photos. Here, you can see the subtle differences between Very Black and Black:
Final thoughts…
I think COVERGIRL achieved what they set out to do with NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara—and that was to deliver a non-clumping, natural-looking, volumizing mascara with fewer synthetic ingredients. I like this as an everyday, better-than-basic mascara that isn’t too outrageous, nor is it boring. My lashes stay soft and touchable, and slightly lifted for the day without any flaking issues. The one recommendation I would make is for anyone who has issues with allergies or very watery eyes—opt for the water-resistant formula instead.
Price & Availability: $8.99, drugstores & drugstore.com; in black, very black, black brown, and brown
