Review & Swatches: Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow

Here in Southern California, we have these epic windstorm events called the Santa Anas, and sometimes they get pretty bad. Last month, our power was out for over 13 hours because of them, and some of our neighbors to the east went without power for a week. Aside from modern-day inconveniences, these winds kick up my allergies something FIERCE. And ever since the winds started coming and going this season, my eyes have paid the price! They’re frequently very watery, red, and itchy—making it nearly impossible to keep eye makeup on lately. Pretty much the only thing that stays on my eyes during times like these, are cream shadows. I’ve had the perfect excuse the put these new Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadows to work, their arrival time couldn’t have been any more perfect!

Available in drugstores next month, you’ll find a collection of Color Tattoo cream shadows in 10 shades; five of which are pretty neutral, while the other five are high-impact fashion shades. These are like a hybrid of Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams and MAC Paint Pots at a fraction of the cost. I don’t know about you, but this is music to my ears.

Shades Available:

Tough as Taupe — dark satin taupe
Too Cool — frosty cool white
Bad to the Bronze — metallic bronze
Tenacious Teal — shimmering bright teal
Painted Purple — vibrant shimmering violet
Fierce & Tangy – shimmering tangerine
Edgy Emerald — pearly bold green
Audacious Asphalt — metallic midnight grey
Punk Pomegranate — darkened metallic plum
Bold Gold — metallic yellow gold

Maybelline promises us that they’re long-wearing, and I most definitely agree. I put some of the shades to a 24 hour challenge, even sleeping in them. And guess what? Even though my eye look didn’t stay 100% intact, I woke up with plenty in place—and it still looked great! Also, during the day, Color Tattoo is standing tall against my watery allergy eyes. How they managed to do this at a mass level without sacrificing quality or pigment payoff, I have no idea, but you can bet I’m sure grateful.

You can apply these with a fingertip or with a small, flat synthetic brush; and I’ve even used some of the bolder shades as liners by applying them with a slightly stiff angled liner brush. Color Tattoo is very apt in the multi-tasking department—you can wear them as a liner, alone as shadow, or as a primer for powdered shadows. Pretty neat, huh? As a side note, my swatching arm is still a little stained from swatching the brighter colors over 24 hours ago. Believe me, I’ve scrubbed!

More photos and swatches…

There’s great news in the dupe department too—several of the Color Tattoo shades were very close matches to some of the MUFE Aqua Creams I own. I’m sure there are more dupes than just the colors I own, but three right off the bat is a good start, right?

Audacious Asphalt is slightly lighter than Aqua Cream #01, but fairly close.

Pomegranate Punk is a great dupe for Aqua Cream #17.

Too Cool is slightly brighter than Aqua Cream #04, but so close!

Bottom Line: Color Tattoo passes the test with flying colors due to its longevity, versatility, and quality pigment payoff. The hardest thing about these will be deciding which colors to buy!

Price & Availability: January 2012 (out now in some areas); $6.99 each, drugstores and mass retailers.

I am SO excited about these! I saw them this weekend at my local grocery store & didn’t pick them up yet since I hadn’t read a review on them!. Thank you for posting this. I can’t wait to go back and pick a few up but I agree it will be hard to choose. I want nearly all of them! :) – Angie

Lately, I haven’t been buying drug store brands but I will need to pick some of these up for sure. I have been getting really frustrated with my liner always smudging and not lasting, so when you said these are great for using as liner I got excited and very interested in getting the audacious asphalt for that reason. The other colours that seem awesome I would like are: Too cool, tenacious teal, and bold gold. Thanks for this review, can’t wait! If you get a chance, keep me updated on how these would take as a liner as in staying power.

I picked these up the other day. I’ve only been able to try a few – but so far, they seem pretty amazing. And I totally agree, they look like dupes, but don’t leave my eye looking crepe-y.

    Love it!

  • Sephiria

Wow, the color payoff looks great! Question – are the brighter colors hard to remove from the eyes with eye makeup remover? Since your arm is still stained with the brighter colors after washing them, I’m wondering how these wash off from the eyes. I’m excited to try one of these and see how they work with my oily lids.

  • Amber

Hi Sephiria! Fierce & Tangy and Painted Purple were the ones hanging on for dear life, but on the eyes these should be easy to remove with an oil-based cleanser ;)

  • Polarbelle

So happy to hear this. For many, many years, Maybelline was the only brand of eye stuff I would buy at the drug store so I know these are going to be great.

  • Nancy Reid

Quite a rainbow of fab colors! Love the little pudge jars

  • Denise

Oh, I am so excited to try these! I’ve been eyeing the Benefit cream shadows but have thus far resisted, since they’re so pricey. Do the Maybelline ones hold up well solo, or do they need a primer underneath?

  • Amber

Hi Denise! I haven’t worn these with primer yet, and they’ve held up incredibly well. :)

  • Katie

I can’t wait to try these too! Love the colors and the price. Thanks for reviewing this as I’ll be sure to buy some.

  • Amber

    They’re awesome, Katie!

Ok I bought this product at walmart for $5.84 and I am more than impressed I wore it new years eve (painted purple) and all of us has been there in whichwe fell asleep with our make up on let me tell u I went to sleep and woke up and my makeup was still perfect my mom and husband thought I woke up and did my eye makeup over 24 hour is an understatement i usually pay a crazy amount for my make up from m.a.c but this omg I need to reinvest my money and time into maybelline .

  • Kelly

These look really nice but I’ve never had a good experience with creme shadows, they always end up creasing and getting oily on my lids.. Anyone have any comments on whether or not these crease badly?

  • Amber

Hi Kelly, I haven’t had these crease on me, but it might help if you look down while applying and try not to bend your lids at the crease for about a minute after applying so they “set”. :)

  • April

Excellent review! You have helped me narrow down my decisions of which ones to purchase & I also have a favorite new blog I will be subbing to! Thanks so much!! :) )

  • Amber

    Thanks, April :)
