Haircutting is an art that isn’t exactly easy to master, so it’s a relief when I have the opportunity to sit in a stylist’s chair that doesn’t induce pangs of worry at the bottom of my stomach. Last week, I stopped in at Gavert Atelier, in Beverly Hills to see Mika Fowler, a well-known stylist here in La-La land for her precision cutting technique.
Mika is a master of the art of dry-cutting, using the hair in its natural state to create a flattering style that’s perfect for your face shape. This not only results in a custom, one-of-kind cut—but it also ensures that your style will grow out gracefully. No choppy haircuts here! Just smooth, well-blended lines that make your hair look the best it possibly can.
Hailing from Japan, Mika studied at the prestigious Vidal Sassoon academy, where it’s no secret that haircuts are serious business, which require intense attention to detail. As the style director of Gavert Atelier, Mika seems to embrace that philosophy with her craft; explaining to me that she’s extremely dedicated to the details in her work.
Mika tells me,
I’m very, very picky. When I say three-quarters of an inch, I mean three-quarters of an inch!
After expertly wielding her shears—I wound up with a gorgeous, face-framing cut with fantastic movement that ranks up there with one of the best I’ve ever received in Los Angeles. Celebs like Annalynne McCord, Rosario Dawson, and Karina Smirnoff all entrust their locks to Fowler, and it’s easy to see why. A cut in Mika’s chair will set you back a cool $250, but this is definitely a perfect example of getting what you pay for.
