This April, OPI will add six new shades to the existing SoftShades collection, inspired by the New York City Ballet. With five sheer shades and one glittery top coat, New York City Ballet by OPI brings a chic and feminine look to the nails. Similar to the existing colors in the SoftShades collection, these are sheer, muted polishes that leave your nails looking clean and perfectly polished. If you like shades like Bubble Bath and So Many Clowns, So Little Time—you shouldn’t have a problem picking a favorite from the New York City Ballet Collection.

OPI is so excited to work with the New York City Ballet,” said Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director.  “NYCB is rich with artistic history and has a renowned reputation that brings people from around the world to see NYCB performances. The dancers, choreography and costumes provided a wealth of inspiration for a range of soft, feminine hues. The beige, pink, and white lacquers bring to mind classic ballet slippers, tutus and leotards, while the sheer lilac and gray add muted color to ballet’s traditional pink.”

You Callin’ Me a Lyre?, Barre My Soul, Don’t Touch My Tutu!

Care to Danse?, My Pointe Exactly, Pirouette My Soul

More photos and swatches…

You Callin’ Me a Lyre? is a sheer cotton candy pink.

Don’t Touch My Tutu! is a sheer, milky white.

Barre My Soul is a sheer beige.

Care to Danse? is a sheer lavender.

My Pointe Exactly is a sheer grey. This is the first time I’ve seen a transparent grey like this.

Piroutte My Whistle is a glittery top coat with multi-size silver glitter in a transparent base.

Each shade is very sheer and will take three coats before you’ll start to see any real opacity (swatches were all done with two), so if coverage is what you’re aiming for—this collection might not be for you. My fave picks: Care to Danse?, You Callin’ Me a Lyre?, and Pirouette My Whistle. What are your top picks from the New York City Ballet collection?

Bottom Line…

The New York City Ballet SoftShades collection has shades that are very similar to the SoftShades of yesteryear—so if they look familiar, that’s why! While you may not run out and buy all six, but I do recommend picking your favorite one, and perhaps the top coat (Pirouette My Whistle) too. These deliver a soft and feminine touch to the nails, and are pretty timeless colors. They’re also the perfect shades for a bride and her bridesmaids, and anyone who likes a clean and sophisticated nail color.

As much as I love soft shades like this, if you have really short and not well groomed because of bitting (I know, I know, very bad habit) these shades don’t get justice. I’ve been wanting to try fake nails. Know any that are good?

  • Amber

Celine, I could totally see where these might not work on stubby nails. I think in order to wear these to their full potetial, they look best when you can see a little bit of the nail line.

Cool! I actually like the Pirouette one, it’s so weird! And I’m certainly going to get that glitter!

Oh my! I’ve been googling for swatches of these! I love them all.I don’t normally wear grey nail polish, but I believe a sheer grey might work. They all look extra special with the glittery top coat too!

O my, these are so delicate, soft and pretty. *luff* :)

  • Joanna

Wow, you have such beautiful hands and nails. What products do you use to take care of them?

  • Amber

Thank you, Joanna! I am absolutely nutty about using this balm on them every night at bedtime. I swear by the argan & lavender balm from Four Truffles. It is worth EVERY penny and I use it on my cuticles all the time. http://fourtruffles.com/argan-oil-treatment-balm Additionally, I swear by AVEENO’s new Positively Ageless Skin Strengthening Hand Cream, and any of the hand creams from JR Watkins. (The lemon cream is my fave.)
