Review & Swatches: Mally Beauty Shimmer, Shape, & Glow Face Defining System in ‘Life is Lighter’

This chubby gal has a round face that could use some shape in the form of optical illusions. Even if I’ve lost a substantial amount of weight over the last few months (and it’s FINALLY showing in my face), I still need some contouring help—any way I can get it! Which makes me the perfect candidate to try out the Shimmer, Shape, and Glow Face Defining System from Mally Beauty.

Available on QVC, this product arrives in a nifty soft pink pouch with two brushes (one of them is dual-sided), an instruction card, and a palette with three softly-pigmented shades inside. I love Mally’s packaging! All of the products I’ve tried from her are housed in similar components, like this fun pink-purple aluminum one. Once you open it, the interior of the palette itself has a grey snakeskin print on it (pretty sassy there, Mally), and a great sized mirror.

Each of the three shades are for specific areas of your face; the first one is a light pink with a slight shimmer, the second is a matte contouring shade, and the third is a blush. These kits are available in a variety of shades for different skin tones, and mine is called ‘Life is Lighter‘. I have pale skin, so I figured this would be a good choice for me.

As you can tell from the swatches, the shades in the ‘Life is Lighter’ set are all pretty muted—and I really like it. So many times, I go to contour and I wind up looking like one of the backup dancers in a bad 80’s music video because the color is way too obvious. The other choices are darker from what I understand, so if you’re not fair like me (or wish for more pigment), just select one you think would be more appropriate for your skin tone.

Working with this was pretty easy. The instructions Mally included were simple, and the brushes were really helpful. But there was a little problem with the blush in my kit. The peach shade that’s the designated cheek color was really hard; as if the powder itself was rock solid, and I ended up having to scratch it with the end of the brush handle to soften it up enough to pick up the pigment. Even though it all worked perfect after that, I was kind of bummed about that—and it’s the reason why this didn’t score higher. It’s okay though, Miss Mally Roncal! I still love you and your products, girlfriend!

Bottom Line…

I totally dig this concept, making it easy to contour your face, in shades that are appropriate for varying skin tones—getting it all in one palette is really ideal. For my skin tone, ‘Life is Lighter’ was a great color combo that was very subtle and didn’t scream “HEY! Look at me! I contoured my face!” What was a bummer though, was that the blush was pretty hard and that I had to scrape it to get it started.
