Review: Maybelline The Mega Plush by Volum’ Express Mascara

When I think of drugstore mascara innovators, I automatically think: Maybelline. Even if Great Lash isn’t for you, you have to admit—it truly stands the test of time. Lucky for us, Maybelline has a plethora of mascaras in their product line-up, so there has to be one that you like! This Maybelline mascara train ain’t stoppin’ any time soon, so check out the newest release—The Mega Plush by Volum’ Express Mascara. This will officially hit stores next month (but you may see it on shelves now in certain areas), and of course I’ve got your sneak peek right here!

Let’s take a closer look:

The claim to Mega Plush’s fame is pretty simple. It has a gel-mousse formula that contains 40% less hard waxes, so the result is soft and supple volume. I have to admit, I fell under the spell of my soft lashes and couldn’t stop touching them the first time I wore Mega Plush. They lacked the brittleness that I often get with stiffer mascara formulas, so that claim is true in my book. The good part about me touching them all the time showed me that it doesn’t flake at all—and that’s an attribute in a mascara that is always welcome.

The same thing that makes me like Mega Plush, may be the same thing you might not care for. If you’re someone who likes to see a lot of your mascara on your lashes—this one is more natural-looking, so it might not be for you. What I mean is, if you’re a gal that likes to see serious lash drama and wears thicker formulas (think Diorshow, etc.), you won’t get that with Mega Plush. Even though I wore Very Black in the washable formula, it’s a very subtle effect that places most of the volume at the base—versus throughout the length of the lash.

The brush is on a flexible wand, and features nylon bristles that are tapered on both ends with fullness in the middle. It might take some practice since it’s larger in the middle.

Bottom Line…

Mega Plush makes my lashes feel soft and fluttery, and gives them natural-looking, believable volume. No clumps, and no flaking made me a very happy girl! If you have short, stubby lashes, Mega Plush might not be for you—but it does a great job of enhancing fuller lashes with velvety volume.

This sounds like a great mascara – I hate when my lashes get hard and yuck. Would you consider this formula to be dry or wet?

Eek! This looks like a good mascara! I saw this at bed bath & beyond the other day and wanted to get it, but decided I should really wait for some reviews! Thanks!

  • Amber

Hey Jenn! It’s really neither—it’s so weird, it’s like a perfect hybrid of both!

  • Amber

    Hope you like it, Joyce!

Thank you so much for reviewing this mascara! :) I haven’t worn mascara for a few years, and part of the reason is because I just can’t stand crunchy lashes.

This one looks like something I may try. I really like how the effect is natural, too.

Do you find that this mascara can hold onto a curl? I couldn’t use Colossal and Falsies for they didn’t hold at all.

I bought this mascara without reading reviews. The pretty color of the bottle got me! haha but I’m really happy with this mascara. I love the brush too! My lashes look separated and have volume =] love this mascara!

Holly, it doesn’t hold them as well as let’s say—a ‘curling’ mascara, but I make it through most of the day intact ;) It’s not a very stiff mascara, so if you usually have issues with staying power, this might not be a good fit.

Great review. I saw this other other day and when I finish up my current mascara this will be my next purchase.
