7 Great Products for Dry, Frizzy Hair

in hair products,product reviews

A few months ago, I made the mistake of trying out another colorist for my hair. (For the love of the blog, people!) I should have known better! My regular colorist is all about making sure my hair is nourished after one of my salon visits with her. I don’t know how she manages to do it, but every time I go in to retouch my base color and highlights—it looks better and better. The overzealous colorist I saw that time I cheated on my regular? I honestly don’t think she could have cared less about the health of my hair. She FRIED it into submission, and my hair hasn’t been the same since. While the shampoos and conditioners I’ve been testing lately seem to help, I cannot escape using a serum or an oil to smooth out the ends…which leads me to these seven great products for dry, frizzy hair. If this hair crisis sounds familiar, try one of these, STAT!

Pureology Precious Oil, $40

My stylist, Andi would be so proud! While this could potentially be a little heavy for my hair type, Pureology’s Precious Oil lends a hand to my distressed locks immediately when used sparingly. This intelligent product contains four very precious oils (sunflower, coconut, olive, and jojoba) to restore suppleness, encourage hair flexibility, and add shine. I love using a drop (I mean a drop) of this mixed in with a volumizing mousse to balance out the oil’s viscosity for my fine hair—and it smells AMAZING.

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment, $4.99

As one of Garnier’s newest products, the Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment makes frizz disappear without any heavy, oily residue. For containing the magic of argan oil, this is a super affordable solution to pricey salon products.

Smooth ‘N Shine Olive & Tea Tree Treatment Oil, $4.99

This is my favorite product of the bunch to use as an overnight treatment! Aside from frizz-busting olive and tea tree oils, this contains a little bit of invigorating menthol that makes my scalp feel incredible. Massage it into your scalp right before bed, rinse out in the morning, and wah-lah! You’ll have more manageable hair. Make sure you cover your pillow!

Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil, $29

All Soft Argan-6 Oil is a fantastic multi-tasking product with six uses. Use before your blowout for hydration and smoothness, deep condition at night, boost shine, or you can even mix it in with a deep conditioner to give your hair some extra TLC. I like the slight “slip” this creates so my round brush doesn’t snap my stressed hair.

Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum, $18.50

With macadamia oil, Vitamin E, and evening primrose oil, try this serum on a finished style to boost your shine factor. Even though it has a dimethicone base, I feel like it absorbs instead of coating, temporarily filling in the millions of little holes that highlights poke in the hair strand.

Dove Style + Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum, $3.76

Girls with lots of curls should like this creamy serum! Try one pump emulsified in the palm of your hands to create definition, by gently twisting a medium section of curls at a time. It keeps the ends together so you don’t look like a cotton ball by the end of the day!

Aquage SeaExtend Silkening Treatment Oil, $35

This wet styling treatment contains sea botanicals, argan oil, and almond oil to give the hair seriously silky shine. It also accelerates drying time and protects against thermal damage. If you’re a flat iron addict, this is for you!

Thank you so much for the post…. This is definitely an issue for me!

    I’m happy it was helpful!

Was not an issue for me until this past yr when I started to grow my hair long…now I have friz all the time, despite good treatments for hair masks and great shampoo. What I use for my fav that does not weight my hair down is Ojon revitalizing mist which they just put back into their line. I use it on dry hair.

I’m a big fan of Ojon myself! It always amazes how the products don’t leave build up behind, but they’re deeply hydrating.

thank you for the info, very helpful, I use a good product that is helping me to avoid the frizz, it’s Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan Oil which protects my hair and keeps it soft, shiny, frizz less and healthy. :D

I have a friend who swears by Moraccan oil but she has super curly hair and so if it weighs the hair down it still looks good. Every time I try an oil or a shine product my hair looks absolutely lifeless… even if i only put on a drop.
I am walking the Camino de Santiago next year and can take very little in the way of cosmetic and hair products…no blow dryer or straightner! Which of these products do you recommend if you could only use one product? … Not sure how I will make it without all my stuff! :)
    Thanks so much!

Hi Dale! I have pretty fine hair myself, so I totally understand how some of these products could look too heavy. I would check out a creme-based serum like the one from Dove if you have a problem with oil/dimethicone bases. This one didn’t make the list this time, but you may even want to try Aveda’s Damage Remedy. It’s a lightweight gel-creme balm that repairs over time and smoothes out the cuticle.

Isn’t Argan oil the most amazing ingredient ever? I have eczema on one of my eye lids (SO ANNOYING), and it seems like the only thing that gives me any relief is a drop of pure Argan oil.

    One
great product, in my experience, for keeping hair healthy and frizz free is argan oil. I have
Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan Oil and it deeply conditions and hydrates my hair,
plus it leaves it smooth and shiny. Recommend it!
