Review & Swatches: Pieces From the NARS Andy Warhol Color & Silver Factory Collections for Holiday 2012

Every so often, something comes across my desk that kind of kills me a little bit to use, because I don’t want to ruin it. Case in point—this eyeshadow palette from the upcoming NARS Andy Warhol Silver Factory Collection for holiday 2012. NARS pays homage to this pop art pioneer with an assortment of items in three designated collections for holiday 2012 that are visually stunning!

From NARS:

Andy Warhol’s world has been inspiring François Nars for years. Now NARS introduces a limited edition collection in the spirit of Andy Warhol. From the formulas and shades to the packaging and names, every element of the collection evokes François Nars’ take on the cool, image-rich, character-laden world of Warhol.

Everybody is a Superstar. At least for 15 minutes.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of the items I tried!

You’ll find that the Andy Warhol collection is broken up into three parts. There’s the Color Collection, the Pop Collection, and the Silver Factory Collection. From the Silver Factory Collection, I tried out the Self Portrait 2 Eyeshadow Palette (there will be three available), and it hurt me so badly to use it! There’s an over-spray of Warhol’s famous self-portrait on Self Portrait 2; and the three shades are black, white, and silver.

The overspray dusts off very easily to reveal all three colors, and the palette is HUGE! It’s much larger than a typical NARS eyeshadow trio (This is 0.42 oz—and for example—a NARS bronzer is 0.28 oz), the price certainly reflects that at $55. (Also taking into account the specialty collectable attributes of this collection.) Whether it’s worth it to you is certainly another story. In terms of the quality of the eyeshadow, I really like the trio—but it’s a dramatic smoky eye lover’s palette for sure and it’s not something I’d refer to on a daily basis. As far as the texture goes, I think the black and the grey are KILLER in this trio. They’re smooth and velvety  to the touch and very pigmented. The white however, was very powdery and gave quite a bit of fallout. Now that I think of it, I think the black could have been a little more blendable, but in all honesty it’s something I’ll only use as a liner so it’s not much of an issue for me otherwise. I personally won’t wear it elsewhere on my eye because black shadows aren’t very flattering on me…even with a smoky eye, due to my eye shape. So that’s really going to be up to you whether you think the black is up to par.

“Art is what you can get away with.”Andy Warhol

There’s a quote on the inside of each mirror on the eyeshadow palettes!

The exterior of the Self Portrait Eyeshadow Palettes in the Silver Factory Collection are printed in a reflective silver ink.

More pieces in the Silver Factory Collection…

There are five nail polishes available in the Color Collection, and I tried out Superstar—a dark teal. It takes on more green or blue qualities depending on the light source, and I can honestly say that this is my favorite NARS polish I’ve ever owned to date! The quality and finish is phenomenal. One coat is full opaque, the flow is perfect, and it’s just an attractive color for fall that will take you to holiday and beyond. I’m kind of lusting over the New York Dolls shade too, and I hope I can get my mitts on it soon before it’s sold out! I highly recommend this one my friends!

Bottom Line…

This collection is packed full of pieces that will be sure to end up collector’s items this holiday season. I have a feeling they won’t last long on shelves or online, so if you see any that you like or that you think will be a great gift for someone—don’t hesitate! Great job, NARS! You hit this one out of the park!
