One of Stila’s best-sellers is the Smudge Stick, a sleek waterproof eyeliner pencil, known for its long-wearing abilities. For holiday 2012, Stila offers up a gift set of these famous pencils—the Seeing Stars Smudge Stick Set. Let’s take a closer look!

Stila ‘Seeing Stars’ Smudge Stick Gift Set

The breakdown…

  • stargazer — black with gold and silver pearl
  • angelfish  — metallic champagne beige
  • tetra — deep shimmery purple
  • moray — golden olive shimmer
  • oscar fish – warm brown with gold pearl

Smudge Sticks are housed in twist-up propel pencils, and have an easy-glide formula which makes them a cinch to apply. I have noticed however, that some shades aren’t as smooth as others. For instance, Moray and Angelfish both glide on super easily for me, but Oscar Fish tugs just a little. As far as length of wear goes, these are long-wearing and last all-day for me—but they’re not as long-wearing or as vibrant as the original Smudge Pots, which I highly recommend!

While these shades are indeed pretty, I would have liked to see the inclusion of brighter pigmentation for a holiday gift set. I also noticed that the bases of shades Oscar Fish and Stargazer weren’t as intense as I would like. On the plus side—shades Moray (olive), and Angelfish (champagne) are real stunners, so I wouldn’t pass them up. Since a single Smudge Stick retails for $20, the $32 price tag on this set of five is pretty wallet-friendly!

Swatches…

Moray, Angelfish, Oscar Fish, Stargazer, Tetra

OH! I can’t forget! There an exclusive Stila promo code, just for Beauty Junkies Unite readers to save 25% off items from the holiday collection until 12/15. Bottom Line…

While not flawless, I do like Stila’s Smudge Stick formula for its easy application and long-wearing abilities. I would have liked to see Stila take some chances here! Where are the really fun colors? It’s the holidays!

I bought this last month on an impulse at Sephora… I think it’s a good deal at the price, and for sure with that discount code- that’s $4.80 each which is incredibly cheap. It was not what I was expecting though. The colors are pretty, but very subtle.. sheer is the wrong word.. more like a translucent quality. They do have some beautiful sparkle, the photo above does not do the brown justice.. it’s more like the shimmer shown in the green and purple IRL, pink and gold sparkle- super pretty. They perform well on the lash line, smudgable then set well ( if you do smudge them it’s easy to go too far since there is not a lot of pigment to work with, have to use a very light hand) but not so great for wl/tl (they stay sticky and a bit smeary over the day inside the eye, tend to stick to your lashes, and you really have to work to get the pigment to apply) which makes the champagne color kind of a bust. I guess it’s good for highlighting. The formula is smooth and easy to work with, glides right on. I have been getting a lot of use out of them, very natural yet have that pretty shimmer.. especially with a light neutral or even bare eye.. just don’t expect the kind of “pop” you get from UD or NYX.

I like the smudge sticks, but like you…I love the smudge pots! However, I went to use one the other day (an odd color – cobalt blue – not an every day use) and it was a bit dry. I love these and I don’t want to throw it away. Is there anything I can do to ‘bring it back’? I’d appreciate any feedback as I own several of these and I don’t want to lose them!

I love these Smudge Stick liners, I have a couple shades and they are perfect to use as an eyeshadow base, they apply so smooth and not tugging on the skin, plus the colors are WOW when you really pile it on! *adding this set to xmas list* :) oxo

Hey Ann! I don’t really think there’s much you can do–I think a “fix” might affect the integrity of the product :(
