Okay, so my skin isn’t so young anymore—and neither am I.

Growing up, I spent summers and spring breaks camping with my favorite crazy uncle. We spent days on the lake without a drop of sunscreen, and I had more than my share of blistering sunburns. Mind you, I’m of Irish descent, and my skin could have been considered translucent when growing up. Miraculously, my skin recovered when I was younger—and of course I go to my derm now for every little spot I see, and for yearly checkups. Back then, I just didn’t know any better. But my, how times have changed.

I’m approaching 37 years old, and my skin isn’t as resilient anymore. But I’d like to think I take good care of it, and I wish I had started younger. I made some mistakes—and if any of this sounds familiar—these are some of the things I stand for when it comes to my skincare regimen! Even if you don’t wear makeup, I promise these will be helpful!

The Do’s…

  • Wear sunscreen EVERY DAY. It doesn’t matter if you’re not going outside. Those damaging rays come through windows! Don’t like sunscreen? Opt for a brush-on SPF powder (for at least your face) and reapply when you touch up your nose in the ladies room!
  • Do go to a dermatologist once a year to get those pesky moles checked out, it could save your life!
  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, both AM & PM. The environment is filled with so many free-radicals during the day. Get that icky car exhaust, smog, and cigarette smoke off your beautiful face!
  • Do start a skincare regimen early, even if you think you don’t need it. A basic cleanser, simple eye cream, inexpensive nighttime moisturizer, and sunscreen with at least an SPF15 for the day will set you off on the right foot. If you’re in your early 20’s and haven’t started yet, do it. Trust me—you’ll thank me later.
  • A little more advanced in your regimen? Peels are an AMAZING way to make your skin glow. Set aside a little time weekly to do a quick 10-minute peel with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s; like lactic and glycolic acid). They work wonders for de-gunking pores and making skin smooth and fresh.

  • Sleep with your makeup on. I know it’s tempting, but at the very minimum—use a facial cleansing wipe. But really, it’s best if you cleanse your skin with facial cleanser before bed. Then it’s all prepped for your nighttime skincare regimen.
  • Forget your sunscreen! If your foundation has an SPF to it, great. But don’t rely solely on it if you can help it. Remember those brush-on powder sunscreens I just told you about? They’re perfect for re-applying through the day to add to the UV protection factor.
  • Hold a dirty cell phone to your face—make sure you wipe it down regularly! You will not believe how your skin will break out from icky cell phones.
  • Don’t forget to smile. All the world loves a smiling gal! You’re beautiful, and a smile will make your skin glow. Trust me!

And a few little tricks I’ve learned…

  • Use radiance-boosting products like luminizers and highlighters to add points of light on the face. It makes your skin look bright and youthful.
  • As I age, I notice LESS coverage is MORE! Opt for tinted moisturizers, BB creams, CC creams, and products that add luminosity to the skin. Matte, thick foundations have a tendency to make the skin look older than it really is!

Is night cream really all that important? I do have a skincare routine that includes face wash, eye cream and face cream. I never thought night cream would make much more of a difference than the cream I use during the day.

Your skin is doing all of its repair work while you’re sleeping, so it’s important to feed it nutrients to get the job done :)

Amber is right! Night repair is so important. Start in your twenties!

Honestly, don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but I’ve been using Nerium AD and see a total difference in the texture of my skin, my fine lines have decreased dramatically… if you want better skin–I’d say find someone with a bottle and try it out.

Thanks, Katelyn! I’ll look for it :)
