mac mineralize volcanic ash exfoliator

I’ve long heard the tales of the MAC Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator, but I had no idea what I was missing because I could never seem to catch it in its limited release spurts. I no longer have to worry about such things, because it’s finally permanent in the MAC core line—and I’m SO glad!

MAC Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

What it is…

MAC Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is a unique mineralized foaming, sugar-based scrub that contains the oil-absorbing properties of volcanic ash. The ash particles are ultra fine, so the grit in this exfoliator is actually coming from the sugar. The exfoliator is suitable for both face and body, and has a muddy appearance with a thick texture. There is quite a bit of fragrance in the product; I want to say it’s floral, but it almost seems fresh and masculine at the same time. You’ve probably got to smell it to see why I’m conflicted in the fragrance description.

MAC says this is suitable for all skin types, but to be honest—I’d personally be hesitant to recommend this to anyone with sensitive skin. The sugar seems to break down pretty quickly, but I’d still err on the side of caution unless you know that sugar scrubs don’t irritate your skin for those on the sensitive-side. My first time out with this, I was over-eager! I applied it to moistened skin as instructed, but I applied a TON of it, and I also applied it and washed it off at my bathroom sink. Big mistake! While the blackened ash eventually dissolves and washes down the drain, it is kind of a messy sink-side product. I now use this in the shower about twice a week instead and am much happier.

My favorite part about using this product is the hydrated and silky-feeling slip it leaves behind, but I have to admit that it’s pretty addictive to use in general. I tend to be lured in by products that contain oil-absorbers like charcoal, etc., so that makes volcanic ash a perfect fit for me.

Bottom Line…

I quickly became a fan of this MAC cult fave! (I just wish it wasn’t such a mess to wash off unless you’re in the shower.) It totally de-gunks my skin, sloughs off the dead skin, and makes my face feel smooth and soft.

I’m so glad this is permanent now! I can finally get a chance to try it … although it is pretty pricey ($34CAD)! Thanks for the review!

It’s definitely too pricey to use as a body scrub! I’ll be keeping mine for my face :)

Has this caused any irritation to your face? And do you have good skin? as in many blemishes? (I ask this in the least offensive way as possible). I really want this, and I tried it in store today. Worked well!

    Hi Dani,

Nope! No irritation! I get the occasional blemish here and there, but I don’t struggle with much acne.
