riri hearts mac collection fall 2013

Today is the day! You can officially purchase the new RiRi Hearts MAC Fall Collection at North America MAC stores, then it’s launching at other locations and online on October 3rd. It’s a comprehensive collection, with eyeshadow palettes, new lipsticks, a RiRi Woo Lipglass, and more.

From MAC:

Rihanna premieres her perfect palette of lavish fall colour – a range of decidedly daring yet classically gorgeous shades, finishes and tools, all encased in the metallic warmth of rose gold packaging. Lipstick in deep raisin, orange frost, creamy nude and the vivid red of RiRi Woo match gleaming Lipglass, while eyes in contrasting soft and smoky cocoas complement luminous skin highlighted with Diamonds Cream Colour Base and Powder Blush in Bad Girl Gone Good.

Let’s check out what I tried a little closer! This is a comprehensive review, so get settled in…

There are four lipstick shades in the fall collection, with RiRi Woo being a repromote.

  • Who’s That Chick — mid-tone orange frost
  • Talk That Talk — matte dark plum
  • RiRi Woo — matte cool red (not pictured)
  • Nude — cool nude cream matte (not pictured)

To my surprise, I found that I liked Who’s That Chick the best. I thought it applied evenly straight from the bullet, and almost leans a little peach which I think makes it a little more wearable. With the mattes (RiRi Woo and Talk That Talk), I find that the lipstick tugs and skips a little, so I applied with a lip brush, then went over it again straight from the bullet. Both of the mattes that I have were a little drying, wore for over 6 hours, and slightly stained my lips. Talk That Talk seems a little patchy during application, so it may take some extra time to even out. I recommend RiRi Woo (again), and Who’s That Chick for purchase.

See this post for a comparison of Ruby Woo and RiRi Woo.

There are two Pro Longwear Lip Pencils in the collection; RiRi Woo, and Talk That Talk. They correspond with their namesake lipsticks, and I think they’re nice to have, but certainly not essential since both shades stand on their own so well. I have the RiRi Woo pencil, and I do like it for lining my lips with both the RiRi Woo Lipstick and Lipglass because it helps stop migration. The texture of the pencil is stiff and a little dry, for a matte effect.

The RiRi Woo Lipglass is just…wow. I am in love with this cool red creamy lippie. This is one I’d be tempted to get a backup of, because it’s just so sassy. It has the typical Lipglass tack to keep it in place for several hours, and a slight vanilla scent that dissipates shortly after application.

The Powder Blush Duo in Hibiscus Kiss is actually a repromote from the summer collection, only now it’s in limited edition packaging with a mirror inside the lid. It contains a vibrant coral blush with a satin finish, and a deep satin bronzer, embossed with RiRi’s signature. This was one of my favorite RiRi Hearts MAC products already, so it’s nice to have it in the special packaging. I wear the blush more than the bronzer, and if I had one gripe, I wish the blush section were a tad larger because it can be hard to get my blush brush into that small area.

Can we talk about the packaging for a minute? I LOVE IT. I was a little let down by the previous RiRi releases because they were in standard black components, so my wish has finally been granted. I’ve read that some people think it looks cheap, but I don’t—I think the rose gold with RiRi’s signature in pink looks rockin’.

There are two Eye Shadow X 4 Palettes in the collection; Her Cocoa, and Smoked Cocoa. I hear Her Cocoa is a stunner, but I have Smoked Cocoa, and I thought the pigmentation and texture of all four shadows were lacking. There aren’t shade names for the shadows in this palette, but the darkest two were patchy when applied and difficult to blend. The remaining two were okay, but I just don’t think we should have to work that hard to make it work. I’m sorry about this one! I’ll check out Her Cocoa instead, I think I’ll have better luck.

The Liquidlast Liner in Pointblack came to play! This deep, true black liquid liner did not budge at all. When it came time for removal, I had to use my oil-based makeup remover three times before I was able to get it all off. So if you’re looking for a black liquid liner to go this distance, Pointblack is your babe. I’m not super skilled at applying liquid liner, so the brush made my application a little shaky. It’s a little on the thicker side which helps stop it from going too wayward for those that are a little more experienced.

I’m pretty sure I’ve reviewed the Veluxe Brow Liners before, and in this collection there are two shades; Deep Brunette, and Deep Dark Brunette. (Deep Brunette pictured below.) What I love about these, is the soft, powdery texture of the pencils. It creates a softer, diffused look instead of a harsh line. I totally recommend finding your color in this if you need a new brow pencil.

Gigablack Extended Play Lash is actually one of my favorite MAC mascaras, which I’ve previously reviewed here. It adds curl to my lashes, a little volume, and plenty of definition thanks to its small brush. It allows you to get in there and grab every last lash.

The Powder Blush is in a shade called Bad Girl Gone Good, which is a warm copper satin. This wasn’t the best shade for me personally, but it did wear for about seven hours before it started to fade. The texture is nice and smooth, and blends nicely on the skin.

And last but certainly not least—we have the Cream Colour Base in Diamonds. This is a beautiful, creamy highlight shade that’s soft enough to blend easily, but not so soft that it settled in my pores. I like applying a little dab of this on my cheek bones, the highest point of my eyebrows, and just a touch on the bow of my lip for subtle definition.

I’m with you – I think the packaging is super cool and lovely! I was hoping for more blush options, as a blushaholic! Do the shadows pop out of the palette like a regular MAC pro palette? Her Cocoa is highly interesting to me…and the brow pencils look pretty groovy!

The shadows have to be de-potted :( And I agree about blush! I would have loved to see maybe one or two more cheek colors. Let’s see what holiday brings!

Thank you for such amazing swatches! I’ve been wondering whether or not to get anything from this range, I missed the last release! It doesn’t come out for a few days yet in the UK so I’ll have to get my deciding cap on!

Love the look of the lipsticks, but I have a couple of colours similar to RiRi Woo and Talk That Talk already so do I neeeeeeed them….yes.

I love the packaging! Maybe not the big R in the background, but nice to have a change to standard Mac!

Thank you so much for stopping by! I’m glad this was helpful to you :)

I don’t know if I can pull Talk that Talk off but I love the concept. I’m fair so it might be too drastic, but i plan on stopping by a counter before it sells out! Thanks for the great reviews.
