OPI Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Collection Review, Photos, Swatches

With one of the best selling Christmas albums of all time, songstress Mariah Carey partnered up with OPI for the second time this year, for the new Mariah Carey Holiday Collection for 2013. With 18 shades to choose from, let’s take a closer look…

“This holiday season is all about red, glitter and texture for nails,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “With 18 shades, there’s a perfect hue for every occasion. The 12 crème and glitter lacquers include classic reds, champagne gold, and warm burgundies, while the six Liquid Sand shades should be worn without top coat for a matte finish in icy, frosted colors.

Baby Please Come Home, Kiss Me at Midnight, Make Him Mine

Just in case you haven’t tried a Liquid Sand shade before (there are six in this collection), they’re meant to be matte texture finishes, so skip top coat with them.

A few things I noticed…

  • I Snow You Love Me isn’t very easy to work with. You’ll definitely need to dab the glitter on, as it doesn’t lay down easily with a brush stroke. Since the glitter is so large, the pattern it lays down is kind of sparse.
  • The consistency of All I Want for Christmas is OPI seemed just a little thinner than the rest of the shades, but not overly troublesome.
  • The Liquid Sand shades work best if you allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second.
  • My favorite shades are Warm Me Up, and Make Him Mine.
  • I thought Emotions was out of place at first and it didn’t make sense, but then I remembered about Santa leaving a lump of coal, so it’s kind of cute.

Does the texture of the liquid sand means it catches on anything? I’m loving Make Him Mine but I’m worried about the texture getting caught in my hair (glitter, 3D nail art, etc. tend to get caught on my nails and that’s a disaster)

That is a very good question! I never really thought of that. It may tug a little bit on hair or grab cotton from cotton balls.

How do you keep your cuticles so neat? Every time I see your pictures of nail polish colors your nails look so smooth and perfect (do you use a certain base coat and/or top coat?). Your cuticles are so perfect too, with not a drop of nail polish on them (even though you completely cover your entire nail with color), and they look so smooth and moisturized. I know I am not the best at dong my nails, but I do try (though I always manage to get polish on my skin as I try to cover my entire nail). :-) Do you have any tips/tricks for getting such outstanding results? :-) Thanks for sharing your photos, they are beautiful! :-) You are extremely talented!

Thank you so much! I appreciate the compliment. I painted a LOT of nails in cosmetology school, so that helps a little bit, but this is the easiest way to paint your nails consistently: http://nailartlove.net/how-to-paint-your-nails-perfectly/

I swear by cuticle oil like no one’s business. I keep one on my desk and apply it at least once a day. I regularly use cuticle remover–CND Cuticle Away is the best I’ve found. I remove it with a rough gauze pad instead of cotton because it really seems to catch all of the dead skin. And finally, I always use Seche Vite top coat. It’s super glossy and self-levels beautifully for the perfect finish. I hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply Amber, your comment was really helpful! :-) I’ve recently discovered Seche Vite and I’m quite impressed, though it’s getting a little gloppy so I’m thinking of trying out Seche Restore, have you ever used it before? I think I’ll have to check out the CND Cuticle Away, and just practice practice practice to try to get neater results when painting. :-) Seriously though, you have some of the best looking nails I’ve ever seen! :-)

Thanks Bonnie! Restore works great, it’s the only thing you can use with Seche without harming the product. Highly recommend! Good luck!
