You’re probably wondering just what in the world is this photograph. It’s of my own face, and it’s not exactly flattering, is it? A few weeks ago, I had the unique opportunity as a Neutrogena ambassador to visit their headquarters for a peek behind the scenes, and to experience their new technology that can show you the future of your unseen acne. The pimple you see tomorrow actually started brewing several weeks ago! The photo above is indicative of that for me, and it’s all exactly where I normally experience blackheads. Eww!
Believe it or not, it can take 6-8 weeks for a pimple to appear…
During my visit, I sat down with a dermatologist and had my skin photographed with Neutrogena’s Clinical Skin Imager. It’s a special camera that has the ability to spot acne causing bacteria, deep within the skin’s surface. I was amazed! While I’m pretty fortunate not to suffer from a lot of raised pimples on a regular basis, I do struggle with a lot of clogged pores in my t-zone—which is a direct result of the excess oil that is generated by my combination skin type.
One thing I did learn, is that hormonal breakouts are a little different, especially as a woman who sometimes experiences them around that time of the month. That’s usually when my raised pimples start showing up. Where all those little red dots are is actually the blackhead causing bacteria that will start to rear its ugly head in the future if I don’t take action. I find that many people often don’t start doing something about their breakouts until they actually see them pop up, which isn’t exactly proactive! So I asked the dermatologist what I could do to help prevent that unseen acne (in my case, blackheads) from popping up in a few weeks. The solution for me isn’t all that difficult—and it all starts with cleansing. By simply incorporating a Neutrogena acne-fighting cleanser into my skincare routine twice a day, I’m armed with the first line of defense against that pesky unseen acne!
I had a few alternatives in the line, but this is what’s best for me:
For AM cleansing, I could actually go two ways—the Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Acne Wash, or the original amber-colored Oil-Free Acne Wash. Since I like to wash my face in the shower in the morning, I picked the pink grapefruit because I find it pretty refreshing when I wake up. For PM cleansing, I could also go two ways.
Since I’m primarily dealing with trapped oil in my pores in my t-zone, I picked the Neutrogena Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser, OR the Blackhead Eliminating Cleanser/Mask. I’m actually getting a 2-for-1 deal with both of these since the Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser can keep my skin gently exfoliated regularly, or the Blackhead Eliminating Cleanser/Mask can act as a penetrating mask about once a week to zap up all that excess oil. For you, the solution might be the same Neutrogena acne-fighting cleanser for both AM and PM cleansing, I don’t necessarily think everyone needs two cleansers—this is just the best combo for me.
