Recap: IMATS 2009 Los Angeles

In the past month or so, you may have heard me talking wildly about attending this year’s IMATS– the International Makeup Artist Trade Show.  I try to attend as many shows as I can because I learn so much and enjoy all the visual stimuli.  This year the LA show was held on June 21st & 22nd at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend both days but I was able to attend the Saturday show and it was packed!  Makeup Artist Magazine holds this makeup artist mecca yearly to a full house and now I know why– it’s loaded with brands, education and makeup competitions all day long.

There is so much to talk about I and keep saying that I took about one-billion photos.  Maybe not that many–  but I did take quite a few.  I’ll just recap some of the highlights and share some of my favorite photos!

8 students participated in a beauty/fantasy competition with a gothic theme and I could not seem to stay gone for very long.  I enjoyed watching the models as they were transformed into gothic goddesses before my eyes!  I kept checking back periodically over about a 2 hour timespan for the progress on my favorite models and snapped more photos as the work neared completion.

In case you were wondering how she turned out:

I took an immediate liking to the dark bride theme and found myself spending a majority of my time watching her.  I was really impressed with all of the students’ hard work!

I know this is getting a little image heavy– sorry!  There was just so much to see, and this was only the beginning!  Many of the exhibitors focused heavily on airbrush techniques with a huge focus on prosthetics as well.  A large display featured some of the models from movies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Terminator Salvation, and shows like Grey’s Anatomy.  It was SO weird to see some of them, it’s almost eerie because they were incredibly lifelike!  Sadly, this is about as close as I’ll be getting to Brad Pitt anytime in the near future:

Body painting like I spied at the MAC Pro and Mehron booths was also a main attraction:

See!  Lots of visual stimuli!  There was plenty of shopping to be done if you had it in you, but I was really on my best behavior.  I only bought one thing, and it was more out of necessity than a burning desire!  I found a really nifty little gauze-mesh sock to cover my hair with when I’m applying my Dior Airflash foundation called a Garment Saver.  I know– big purchase!  MAC Pro was just insane chaos all day as was Make Up For Ever, the line was snaking around other booths the entire time I was there.  You couldn’t even push your way up to that counter if you tried!  I came across a few brands that I am unfamiliar with and I’ll be showcasing some of their products in future posts.  Among the 40+ brands on the floor I checked out Eve Pearl, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Kryolan, BeautySoClean, Naked Cosmetics, LA Splash and many others.  I can see why people would make 2 days of it, it’s quite a large production!  Hope you enjoyed your trip with me to IMATS 2009!

Lo Bosworth’s look for the MTV Movie Awards

Max Factor’s celebrity makeup artist, Jake Bailey shared some of the hottest looks on the red carpet for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.  Variations of the smokey eye were hot– lighter greens paired with aubergines or navy added a little color to the traditional look.  Lips remain a big focus, and to keep the look fresh– do a simple eye look with light and bright shades like Ms. Terious, Rose Rage and Sweet Tart from Max Factor’s Vivid Impact Lipcolor line.  My personal fave is Ms. Terious!

Jake also created the look for MTV star Lo Bosworth, here’s the breakdown on her makeup for the night:

•Blend MAX Factor ColorGenius Foundation with Minerals in Honey 1 all over face, on eye lids and below jaw line

•Top with Bronze Universel de Chanel for warmth and dimension

•Swipe Chanel eye shadow in Slate on eye lids

•Line lower lashes with MAX Factor MAXeye Liner in Gilt Complex

•Apply two coats MAX Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper in Extreme Blackout

•Finish with MAX Factor Vivid Impact Lipcolor in Sweet Tart

CoverGirl knows how to party at Byron & Tracey Salon

Since the MTV Movie Awards are on Sunday, the stars are coming out in droves to celebrate!  Yesterday at Byron and Tracey Salon in Beverly Hills, CoverGirl hosted an amazing day of pampering to prep the celebs and get them glam for the big show.  Yours truly was fortunate enough to attend, and while I was there I met the gorgeous Monique from Beauty Girl Musings and did a little star-sighting myself!

How gorgeous is Little Miss Abigail Breslin?  She’s all done up in CoverGirl, no doubt!  I had my makeup done by fab makeup artist Toby Fleischman who applied CoverGirl’s Simply Ageless Foundation (and also a new blush that’s debuting in July!) on my skin, it was beautiful!  I also tried a little Lash Blast Luxe Mascara and wore my new favorite lippie, CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain.

I also spied the sensational Rosario Dawson having her beautiful layers blown out, Rachel Zoe looking positively diva,  and Ali Larter looking as amazing as ever.  Will you just look at that handbag?  Alizé was pouring drinks, Express had some great maxi-dresses, and Carrera was taking it back old school with their aviator glasses which are total hotness… I scored some pretty sweet plum colored shades for myself!

The Laker Girls are Stila Girls!

Did you know that the Laker Girls are actually Stila Girls?  And that I’m really a Laker Girl disguised as a Stila Girl?  If being a Laker Girl entails wearing my beloved raggety Lakers nightshirt on the couch while watching the Lakers spank the Nuggets last night, then I’m in!  Okay– only in my wildest dreams.  The only thing I’ve got in common with those Laker hotties is that we proudly rock the Stila!  Last night at the game, Stila sponsored the Kiss Me Cam on the jumbotron at Staples.  Just a little fun FYI!

A look at Angelina Jolie at the Cannes Film Festival

Angelina and Brad are all smiles here at the Inglourious Basterds premiere as they walked the red carpet in Cannes, and with good reason.  If I were part of a scorching hot power couple, I’d be all smiles too!  Angelina looks all done up in retro glamour in her dress by Versace and makeup by Mary Burton who chose Lancome for Angelina’s lips and lashes.

Want to recreate her stunning eyes and luscious lips?  Try layering Lancome’s Oscillation Mascara over Lancome’s Hypnose Mascara for amazing volume and length.  Then, apply Lancome Color Design Lipstick in Candy Apple for screen siren lips that scream to be kissed!

Lancome does the Met Ball

Vogue’s annual Costume Institute gala brought out all the stars on Monday night, and Lancome graced the faces of supermodels and celebrities!

Gorgeous supermodel Alek Wek rocked one of my favorite looks of the night with makeup by Lancome that complimented her iridescent dress that I loved so much!  The PERFECT choice of color up against her ebony skin, I thought it was brilliant!  Here’s the makeup breakdown celebrity makeup artist Oslyn Holder used on Alek for the Met Ball:

First, Oslyn lined the upper lash line with Le Stylo Waterproof in Noir and blended Color Design Eyeshadow in Statuesque and Backstage Pass on the eyelid.  To make Alek’s eyes pop, she applied several coats of Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara in Deep Black. Next, Oslyn added some color to the cheeks using Color Design Cream Blush in Chic Cassis. She finished the look with Color Fever Gloss in Intense to create a beautiful, deep burgundy pout.
