Meet L.A.’s Own Brow Diva Darling, Kelley Baker

Kelley Baker Brows

Recently, I experienced a twist of fate, one that will likely change my eyebrows for a very, very long time. I’ve been into threading for several years, due to a few bad waxing experiences. (Those gals weren’t doing such a great job, if you know what I mean.) But after being satisfied with threading for a while, the gals I once trusted began dropping off like flies.

It was impossible to get a consistent result—which drove me nuts because I’m pretty neurotic about my brows as it is. I also began to feel like I didn’t matter as a client anymore. My satisfaction wasn’t even an issue to the last person I saw. When I left her studio for the last time—I said THAT’S IT! No more giving my hard-earned money to people who don’t care about client service or the pride of their work.

not your its eyebrows

Yes, eyebrows matter!

I know you’re thinking—they’re just eyebrows Amber, no big deal! But brows are like art, just like the eyeshadow you wear, how you perfect your lashes with so many coats of your favorite mascara, or wearing your favorite lipstick. They’re crucial for facial recognition, and one of the first things you notice about someone when you meet. You know you’ve cringed when you’ve met a gorgeous gal with bad brows before (or a guy for that matter). Having the correct eyebrow shape performed by a TRUE brow expert will SERIOUSLY up your beauty game.  [Read more…]

Send Your Brows to Rehab with the Elke Brow Collection

elke brow collection

I’m not afraid to leave home sans makeup, but there are two things I am absolutely OCD about: clean brows, and clean, healthy-looking nails. Those two things are pretty non-negotiable for me. I don’t know why it’s those two things, but it just is! Many years ago, some crazy esthetician whacked off the tails of my eyebrows, and my brows haven’t been the same since. I’ve spent years treating them with TLC, with the hopes of making them look fuller than they really are, but I haven’t been 100% successful. I know this situation sounds familiar to so many of you.

About six weeks ago, I had a brow experience that nearly sent me into a tizzy. I realize it’s not the end of world, but my regular threader wasn’t in because she’s on vacation for a few weeks (you know I can’t wait that long!), so I reluctantly sat in another gal’s chair. That was my first mistake. A few minutes later, I looked in the mirror, and my stomach nearly dropped. She got a little too happy with the thread like it was a weed whacker. I politely tipped and got out of there, but I was so bummed. You’re thinking—Amber, it’s hair—it will grow back. I assure you, it’s a struggle to get my sparse little hairs to reappear. I left there knowing I had to rehab my brows all over again, and I have been ever since. Great.

Brow box has two compartments

I had the previous version of the Brow Box, and I loved it dearly. This one is a step up, it has two levels of brow goodies—with tools (tweezers and angled brushes), brow powder, setting wax, and two mirrors (one magnifying, one regular). Brow Box is available in two shades; Honey Pot (dark blonde/light blonde), and Brown Sugar (dark brown, light brown). If you’re a redhead (lucky you!), I think Honey Pot should be okay for you. Review & Swatches: MAC The Stylish Brow Collection

I’ve always had trouble with my brows, especially since an over-eager esthetician ripped the tails of mine off one day, many moons ago. Ever since then, I’ve had the worst time correctly filling them correctly in without making them look too crazy. I recently spent some time getting better acquainted with my brows and The Stylish Brow Collection from MAC.

Let’s check out what I’ve naturally got to work with:

Not exactly terrible, right? But I can use some help in the filling in department. Let’s see if any of these products helped!

The products…

First up, the Fluidline Brow Gelcreme. This stuff is not a joke! This is a long-wearing, highly-pigmented gel that allows you to give very precise definition to your brows. I loved working with this stuff (I applied mine with a MAC 266 brush), but if you go too crazy, it can get too dark and dare I say—TOO defined. A little of this goes a long way, it’s so smooth, and it’s available in the three colors shown below. It sets quickly, too. I chose shade, Deep Dark Brunette, which was a tad red for me, but I still liked it. It’s not something I would wear every day, but for going out with a stronger brow, I’d pick the Fluidline Brow Gelcreme. It’s fantastic—great formula! [Read more…]

Review & Swatches: Benefit High Brow Glow

Friends, do you remember Benefit Mr. Frosty? It was a chubby, frosty pearl white highlighting pencil that I was OBSESSED with. Not just a little bit, but I mean A LOT. If they still make the darn things, I can’t find them anywhere—but I guess it doesn’t really matter since I stopped wearing it once I realized that maybe it was just a little too frosty. And let’s face it—I’m not exactly very young anymore. Frost anything + more mature skin/eyes = not a good look. The point I’m getting at, is eventually I switched out Mr. Frosty for the matte pink of High Brow to highlight my brow bone and it looked about elevent-y billion times better on me. I wore it down to a nub, and for some reason started experimenting with other ways to highlight my brows without repurchasing. So many beauty products…so little time!

Fast forward to 2012; there’s a new High Brow in town! It’s called High Brow Glow, and it’s a softly shimmering champagne pink shade that has just the right amount of pearl without looking overly frosty. Yay!
