The Lipstick League: Week of 12/1/14

Happy December! I love the scents of this season, especially the way Christmas trees smell. Unfortunately, we have two cats—and one of them is especially mischievous (Scratch!), so unfortunately we have to rely on pine-scented candles and creative ways to have a “tree”. This year, I picked up this sparkly guy at Target, and I’m pretty smitten with it! We have other decorations with lights in the house, and thankfully they aren’t interested in those, because I’ve heard some horror stories. Whew! Do you have any pets vs. holiday decorations stories? I’d love to hear them in the comments! I know we’re all in the holiday bustle, but I hope you can take a few minutes to cruise through these links from my friends in the Lipstick League.

Question of the week: So let’s hear it. Did you make any Black Friday/Cyber Monday beauty purchases? Spill the beans!

Answer: I’m happy to say yes, and no. I actually finished holiday shopping the week before Thanksgiving, and even shocked myself! We don’t have a long list of people to buy for though, so I guess it all evens out. I usually don’t do Black Friday because I worked in retail for a long time when I was younger, and I think I’ve had enough Black Fridays for a lifetime of holiday seasons! On Cyber Monday, I only ordered one thing, and it was Keurig K-Cups because they were having a 20% off sale on their site. Boring, I know! Do you have any special deals you snagged?

Love for Lacquer: Jess shows us how she cleans up her manicures to make them flawless by using Q-tips precision tips!

The Lipstick League: Week of 11/17/14

Pixi Beauty God Jul nail polish swatch

Happy almost Thanksgiving! So last night, we took our first “official” holiday card photo. We’ve been married almost eight years, and have never taken a proper family photo for our Christmas cards. Since we don’t have children, our cats are our children in the photo—and let me tell you—it was a stressful few moments. Looking back now, I think we managed to do a great job considering what we had to work with. But next year we have to rethink our plan!

I went all out red with nails and lips to look festive, and I fell in LOVE with this December Color of the Month shade from Pixi Beauty — it’s called God Jul!, which I’ve found can mean Happy Holidays! or Merry Christmas! in Swedish. I also wore the Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red (it’s perfect!), and I applied their Endless Silky Eye Pen in Glimmery Black. Paired with a neutral eye, I think these products tied together a balanced holiday look that will make our photos festive. I can’t show you the holiday card photos, sadly—but will show you some of the other Pixi products I used soon! I hope you like that polish above. I love it, and that was just one coat in the swatch. I swear!

Question of the Week: Do your beauty spending habits change during the holidays? Do you tend to purchase more (or less) beauty-related items for yourself at this time of year?

Answer: In terms of purchasing, I think I have all the beauty goodies I need to make it through the holidays, but if I spy a cute sparkly cocktail ring, or hair band—it might as well be in my shopping basket! I’ve been known to throw an extra twinkly eyeliner or nail polish in there too, but I honestly find dupes of them as soon as I get home! Every year, I’m always like—now THIS is THEEEE red lipstick I’ve been looking for! And then I already have it at home. The struggle!  [Read more…]

What’s in My Bag!

what's in my bag

I think there’s some part of us that can be a little voyeuristic at times—and I readily admit that I LOVE seeing your “what’s in my bag” posts. So, here’s a peek inside mine!

I’m a creature of habit, and I tend to carry around quite a few essentials. (This is a cleaned out version of my handbag!) Although it’s not pictured—I’m a satchel girl, and I have been carrying my black Rebecca Minkoff satchel for a while. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a ton of pricey handbags in my closet, but I do believe that every woman deserves to own at least one classic, timeless bag that will last and can be carried every day. For me, this is it! I feel the same way about a wallet too. If it’s going to last me a substantial amount of time, I can justify the splurge—so I use the coordinating wallet.

Clothing Swipe

One of these is a new essential for me, and one is a longtime love!

Reviver Clothing Swipe & The Smoke Swipe

If you’ve never had to walk into a wall of smokers to get inside a Starbucks, consider yourself lucky. When I leave Starbucks, inevitably my top smells like coffee beans, and cigarette smoke. While coffee beans aren’t so terrible, smelling like a roasting house or chain smoker isn’t exactly what I’m going for when I’m on my way to a meeting. Whether you’re a smoker or not, the lingering scent on your clothing can be offensive. I play it safe with one of these reusable clothing swipes, they’re genius! Just a quick swipe of the dry pad on your clothes will neutralize offensive odors instantly, and they can be used up to 10 times each. The resealable pouch keeps them secure and fresh in your handbag. Perfect for traveling this holiday season, especially after you’re stuck on all those planes, trains, and automobiles. 3 for $9.99,  [Read more…]

The Lipstick League

Happy Sunday! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Question of the Week: Do you use face primer? If so, what are some of your favorites?

Answer: Absolutely! Unless I’m wearing a BB cream on a lazy day, I won’t go without it. It’s funny that this is the random question of the week considering I already have several on my desk since I’m scheduling a post about primers! For the face, I currently love: Dermalogica Redness Relief Primer w/ SPF 20, Laura Geller Spackle, COVER FX Mattifying Primer w/ Anti-Acne Treatment, and Hourglass Veil. What are some of yours?

The Lipstick League

Whew! You guys, I just read an article that parts of South Dakota and Wyoming just experienced the earliest snow storms in years. They dumped up to 20 inches of snow in parts of Wyoming on Wednesday and Thursday, and sent overnight temperatures plummeting into the 20s in some areas.

I hate to say it—but it just hit noon here in Los Angeles on this September day, and it’s already a smart 101°. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry! Especially considering that I’m staring at both fall and holiday collections on my desk right now, and I’m pondering if it’s too early to post winter collections. Do you still want to see them early? Let me know!

Question of the week:

When a beauty product is labeled “Limited Edition” (LE), are you more inclined to purchase it?

Answer: Hmm. Yes, and no! I’d like to think that I don’t purchase items specifically because they’re deemed “limited edition”, but there are often items in those LE collections that are hard to come by, so I pick them up. Sometimes, it’s just a collector’s item thing for me. Like when brands collaborate with pop culture references, etc. But at this stage, I don’t buy things solely because they are LE. When I was younger, I definitely did! The second an LE MAC lipstick palette came out during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I was all over it. Just because it was limited edition!

I hope you enjoy this week’s links from the lovely ladies of The Lipstick League!

Lipstick league 2

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! This is the week of the 6th anniversary of Beauty Junkies Unite. Keep your eyes peeled here on the blog and on my social media accounts for special giveaways just for you! Now let’s take a look at this week’s links from my friends in The Lipstick League…

Question of the Week: Your friend borrows your makeup and returns it in awful condition. What do you do?

Answer: I would never loan mascara or eyeliner, so that’s out anyway. I have allowed only very, VERY good girlfriends to use my lipstick, and that’s been fine. (I dip in alcohol later to cleanse.) If someone broke a blush pan, nail polish, or foundation bottle, I’d just assume it was an accident and let it go. Over the years, I’ve kind of developed a “don’t expect to see back what you loan out” mentality. (I’m pretty selective about what I loan, and pretty much always receive everything back!) But makeup is a little different to me. If one of my really good girlfriends is in need of something I have (within reason), it’s okay with me if an accident happens. They’d probably offer to try to replace, and that gesture would be good enough for me. I love my makeup collection, but I treasure my friends more! Prime Beauty is not very adept in the kitchen, but she can make BECCA’s Beach Tint Shimmering Souffle present beautifully! Phyrra: Love Urban Decay?
