Fab Find: Roots Only Hair Color Applicator Comb

You know how once in a blue moon you have one of those “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments?  You might have one in just a second.  If you retouch your roots by yourself at home, you need to read this!

At first glance, this rake thing might look a little questionable—maybe even a little scary.  But just how scary can something be if it’s pink, right?  Roots Only is actually a very easy-to-use, no-frills hair color applicator that is truly a lifesaver for people who just need a touch-up at home.  With the help of a hollow-tipped comb applicator attached to a bottle…retouching your roots seriously doesn’t get any more simple.  Instead of mixing your preferred hair color in the bottle that’s usually included in the box you purchase it in, you mix it inside of the Roots Only bottle.  While the use of  the Roots Only applicator doesn’t change anything about the processing time, it definitely makes it easier to apply—by saving time and reducing the risk of overlapping your color (which can lead to over-processed, damaged hair and uneven color).  I was concerned it would prove to be gimmicky, but not so!

To use; make sure you’ve brushed all of the tangles out of your hair, mix your choice of color inside of Roots Only, and squeeze the bottle while you comb it through your hair.  You’ll need to keep the nozzle tips pretty close to your scalp and maintain consistent pressure on the bottle during your application for best results, but it is fairly effortless.  What I think I love most is that I can actually color the hair on the back of my head without getting frustrated!  I’ve tried to employ my husband for the job in the past, and let’s just say—I now only ask for his assistance in the most dire of hair color emergencies.  After using, wash out your Roots Only bottle and applicator nozzle for your next use.  File this one under, Fab Find.

I need a favor! Pretty please? With a cherry on top?

I think it’s safe to say in terms of favors—I don’t really ask for many… but I’m going to ask you for one right now.  And I’m even going to ask you: PRETTY PLEASE?  WITH A CHERRY ON TOP? Imagine me looking up at you right now with my hands clasped together and I’m on my knees.  Pathetic, isn’t it?  I know you want me to stop, and here’s what’s going to make me stop:

After you read this, please go directly to the Clairol Natural Instincts Hair Color Challenge and vote for my friend Paula W. from Oklahoma.  She is now 1 of 5 finalists in their national hair color challenge!  Isn’t that awesome?  If she wins, the Grand Prize is a trip for two to NYC, $1000 spending money, a makeover with a celebrity colorist, and she’ll appear in a Natural Instincts how-to video.

As a part of the beauty blogosphere—you may even already know Paula from her site, Older Girl Beauty. She’s hell of funny and she’s got a heart of gold.  She is one of the nicest people I know and I can often count on her for daily giggles through her Twitter feed.  Paula is always there to perk me up or give me a good pep talk when I need one too.  So let’s help her out, what do you say?

  • Voting starts at 8:00:00 AM ET on 10/7/10 and goes through 11:59:59 PM ET on 10/14/10
  • Go to http://www.clairol.com/naturalinstincts/challenge/contest.jsp and click on the “America Votes” tab
  • Vote for Paula W. from Oklahoma
  • Rules state one vote per email address per day – so, international folks are able to vote daily too

And that’s it, I will stop begging for now.  Let’s pull together as a beauty community and help one of our own win!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Amber

Review: Umberto Beverly Hills U Color Italian Demi Color

Review: TouchBack Temporary Hair Color Marker

Despite the fact that scrubbing black hair color out of my shower every 2-3 weeks isn’t one of my favorite past times, I haven’t been able to keep up with my recent root re-touch because my scalp is very upset with me.  It seems it just knows when our shower filter needs to be replaced…apparently sooner than I do!  I had an event to attend over the weekend and I didn’t want to go with my lovely gray roots showing, but I couldn’t color my hair either because my scalp is extremely sore and irritated.  And that was when the hair fairies reminded me (or more like I remembered) that I had the perfect product for the situation just waiting for me to evaluate.  TouchBack is a temporary hair color marker that claims to instantly and effortlessly disguise gray roots until your next shampoo, so it was a perfect time to put it to the test!

Somewhat resembling a big fat Sharpie, TouchBack contains a temporary hair color (available in 8 shades) without any ammonia or peroxide that actually bonds to your hair and will stay put through brushing.  In bona fide hair color emergencies, I’ve used hair mascaras before but they flake and are a serious pain to use!  Being realistic, I knew that if I was going to get away with this little secret of mine over the weekend that I’d have to make a sacrifice on my hairstyle.  So I opted to wear it up and applied TouchBack (in Rich Black) only where my hair parts and to a few spots around my hairline.  And what do you know?  It totally worked and got me by without looking obvious or consuming a lot of time to camouflage my gray.  It washed out easily this morning and now I’m back at square one waiting for my scalp to behave so I can stop this madness once and for all (well–at least for 2 weeks) and properly color my hair.  The TouchBack marker should last for about 40-50 uses and retails for $29.95, it’s something I personally would consider purchasing to keep on hand as part of a beauty first aid kit for use when I can’t carry out the whole drama of coloring my hair.  It was easy, mess-free, and quick.  Now only if we could get hair color brands to make our at-home color re-touches as painless…

Review: Garnier HerbaShine Hair Color

Now that companies are offering a 10 minute solution to covering gray, it’s highly unlikely I will ever go back to suffering for 25-30 minutes unless I’m testing a product.  We will be a slave no longer to our hair color.

Garnier HerbaShine promises “radiant, shiny color” in 10 minutes, to blend and cover up to 70% gray in 18 shades minus the harsh ammonia.  I checked out #200, Soft Black to cover my own lovely shades of gray and found several things that I liked about HerbaShine.

• No foul odor
I cannot tell you how many times my eyes have watered from excessive fumes.  HerbaShine smells pretty fruity for a hair color, I found it to actually be pleasant.

• Less hair damage
Since this is ammonia-free and fortified with avocado oil, shea butter, and bamboo extract, it seems like my hair wasn’t angry with me when I was finished.  It was soft and shiny after rinsing and applying the included conditioner.
