Fun & Healthy Holiday Nails with L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Color

loreal colour riche nail color glow renewal

‘Tis the season for holiday parties and festive nails!

I have a secret to confess. I’m absolutely terrible at nail art! I try, and I try—and I can’t seem to mimic all of those cool designs I spy on Pinterest and Instagram. You guys keep me inspired and on my toes! In a rare event for me though, I just tried something that I liked.

One of the reasons I don’t have my nail tech give me holiday nail art, is because I don’t want them to be the typical red/green/gold combos I see so much of around here. Sadly, I don’t want Santa or Rudolph on my nails either. Lest you think I’m being all bah humbug about it—I’ve relegated our fave characters to our silly ugly Christmas sweaters and wrapping paper! (Our ugly sweaters this year deserve an entire post devoted solely to them, but I’m afraid we’ll wind up on Awkward Family Photos. That’s another story!)

But…what about blue & white snowflakes with a neutral base shade? So I gave it a shot.

With one of the best mass-brand nail polish shades I can find affordably and easily, L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Color has given me a few options to work with for this idea. Even if it didn’t turn out 100% perfect, there’s still time for me to practice and get it right! And it also gives you time to riff off of the idea and come up with your own variation.  [Read more…]

Holiday Gifting 2014: Indie Brands

indie brand holiday gifts

I’m sure your holiday shopping is in full swing by now, and if not—it will be very soon! Are you stumped on gift ideas for someone special because you don’t want to give something that’s unoriginal, or something that can be found at every retailer in town? I’ve got some great gift ideas for you, and they’re all from indie brands—almost guaranteeing that you won’t be gifting them a dupe they’ll want to return!

I’ve searched for some unique items, and these are a few I fell absolutely in love with. Check out my picks from these indie specialty brands!

gnarly whale hair products

Hair Products from The Gnarly Whale

All of the products from The Gnarly Whale are 100% vegan and cruelty-free, and they smell delicious! This husband and wife team creates unique haircare and bath products with minimal ingredients for low-impact on the earth, yet still yield full efficacy. 10% of their sales each month are donated to earth and marine-friendly charities, like the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

My fave pick is this awesome haircare gift trio with their signature shampoo, detangler, and beach wave spray in their Thai Coconut fragrance. Just $20 will score you this substantial gift, and you can select your product fragrance from a list of 13, or opt for the unscented versions. Once you see the list of available scents though, I have a feeling you’ll go for a fragrance! Coconut Lime VerbenaCoconut Milk & Peaches, or Bubblegum anyone? $20, thegnarlywhale.com

strawn soaps

Olive Oil Bath Soaps from An Ancient Art Handmade Soap Company

My amazing hairstylist turned me on to the soap bars from this tiny artisanal shop out of Strawn, Texas. She gifted me a bar of their handmade Red Wine soap, and I immediately ordered more! I love supporting this small business, they have over 30 scents available in their handmade olive oil soap formula that I’m obsessed with! You’ve got to look at the list of soap fragrance varieties they offer. I’m also a fan of their Vitality Cuticle Cream, and their lip balms. I’ve got the banana lip balm on my desk (which I use very often), and due to its high shea butter and olive oil content, my lips feel like buttah! Soaps—$6.50 each ($6 each for 3 or more—mix & match), strawnsoap.com   [Read more…]

If there’s a birthday around (especially Pixi’s), I’m all for it. Glitter it up, I say!

MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection Nail Lacquers Review, Photos, Swatches — Neptune, Shimmerfish

MAC Alluring Aquatics nail polish neptune shimmerfish

Right away, you already know I’m in love here. First we have two metallic colors that I’m immediately drawn to, and second–we have my favorite element as a Pisces—water! The MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection is home to several gorgeous sea-inspired hues, housed in the most awesome packaging. The components are mirrored aqua, and look like real water droplets on them! Of course, they’re not real water but you will feel some clear bumps molded over the surfaces to give the water effect. Pretty clever there, MAC! Water-sign approved. MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection Nail Polish Neptune Shimmerfish

Neptune, Shimmerfish

There are three shades in the collection, and sadly, I’m missing the third. (Must track down!) Neptune — tarnished gold frost with hints of green, Shimmerfish — sparkling aluminum pearl, and Submerged — dark teal chrome. Excuse me for a moment while I mourn the fact that Submerged hasn’t made its way home yet. Isn’t she glorious?

MAC Submerged Nail Lacquer

I haven’t had the time to finish going the through all the pieces of the collection that I received, but I’m making my way through them this week. I have to say, I found these two shades (Neptune and Shimmerfish) pretty impressive. The formula had a nice flow, and gave full coverage in two coats.  [Read more…]

Easy Team USA Olympics Manicure / Nail Art

Team USA manicure nail art

We still have a few days left of the Sochi Olympics, and it’s not too late to share your Team USA spirit! COVERGIRL sent me a few shades of the Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss to see what I could come up with. I’m not the best at nail art, so if I can do it—so can you!

Here’s what I used to help me out:

tools of the trade

  • A paint striping brush (I bought this one at Sally for under $5)
  • A few nail gems/rhinestones (You can purchase these inexpensively at beauty supply stores, I bought a larger disc for future use.
  • Three shades of polish: COVERGIRL Ever Reddy, Snow Storm, and Out of the Blue.
  • Striping tape (Inexpensive at beauty supply stores, even my CVS and Target carry them!)
  • Nail glue

See how easy it is for nail gems to hide mistakes?

The U.S. design is totally up to you! I did something really easy by painting my nails in alternating shades, the blue, and then the white. I used striping tape on the white nails in an attempt to add a blue half-moon. It didn’t work out so well! So after, I used a striping brush with the red shade to create the stripes of the U.S. Flag, I disguised my mistakes with nail gems.  [Read more…]

Easy Super Bowl Nail Art: Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos

easy super bowl seattle seahawks denver broncos nail art

I know this might seem a little last minute, but you still have time to create the ultimate fashion statement for tomorrow’s Super Bowl! You can create really easy Seattle Seahawks or Denver Broncos nail art to support your team, using striping tape or transparent tape, with a few shades of Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss from COVERGIRL. (Striping Brush is optional. You can find one inexpensively at Sally Beauty.) I’m not the most talented person in the world for nail art, so if I can do it—you can too! Just apply your base shade, allow it to completely dry, then mask off areas on your nails with tape to create additional layer(s) of color. You can also cut shapes into the tape before applying.

If I were a football fan, I’d probably be a Seattle Seahawks fan, due to the fact that I was born in Washington state. But to be honest, I don’t really have a horse in this race, so I wanted to show you simple designs I did for each team. Let me know if you’re rocking an NFL fanicure for the game, or if you want to create your own using any of these tips. Have fun nailgating!

COVERGIRL recently released a Bombshell Collection, and it contains some new nail colors, LipPerfection Lipsticks, Intensity Liners, jumbo gloss balms, a new mascara, and creamy ShineShadows—but I HAD to share these first since these are my absolute favorites from the entire Bombshell collection.
