Review & Swatches: ORLY Dark Shadows Collection

I wouldn’t even be able to guess how long it has been since I last reviewed an ORLY nail polish on BJU. The answer would be, TOO LONG, I know. But when I saw how gorgeous these new releases were, I knew I had to highlight them for you—as they’re part of the Dark Shadows Collection, inspired by the upcoming Tim Burton movie. Let’s get to it, shall we?

There are four nail lacquers in the collection, with each one portraying a name and shade that is supposed to fit the dark humor of the film. I haven’t seen the film yet (and honestly don’t know if I will), but here’s a little background, via the press release:

Director Tim Burton brings the cult classic series “Dark Shadows” to the big screen in a gothic comedy featuring an all-star cast.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from England to start a new life in America.  Two decades later Barnabas is the master of Collinwood Manor—rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard, who dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.  Two centuries pass before Barnabas is freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972.  He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

“Dark Shadows” stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Gulliver McGrath.

Review & Swatches: Urban Decay Eyeshadows (Reformulation) & Build Your Own Palette

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the big surprise from Urban Decay—and in case you missed it, they were such a tease to us last week with the whole empty token thing on Twitter! It didn’t take me long to figure out that it had something to do with the eyeshadows, but I was a little confused—because really, how can you make an Urban Decay eyeshadow even BETTER? I had zero complaints about the original formula, so an improvement to me seemed nearly impossible.

Well ladies, I’m here to tell you; last week, I had the chance to feast my eyes on ALL of them in-person (and touch their buttery, velvety goodness). My verdict is in…they’re AMAZING. You’re probably wondering why I only have three to share, and it’s because these were the three I absolutely couldn’t live without. (I’ll be building my future UD new shadow collection slowly but surely, and very thoughtfully.) These were the three I had the most emotional response to, but believe me, with 68 total shades in 5 finishes—it was HARD to decide. I chose Mushroom, Freelove, and Loaded.

The new token/eyeshadow component has a chromed gunmetal finish, and is a new take on the classic Urban Decay NYC subway token concept they’ve always had for the eyeshadow containers. It took them 18 tries to get this one right! Each shade now pops out from the bottom to fit into a new Build-Your-Own Palette system (which I’ll show you in a minute).  [Read more…]

What’s New: Ralph Lauren The Big Pony Collection of Fragrances for Women

Ladies, check your local Bloomingdale’s or Ralph Lauren stores for this new fragrance wardrobe, The Big Pony Collection of fragrances, just for you—and your individual style from Ralph Lauren!

Each colorful bottle contains a fragrance with your unique personality in mind—and I had fun spending a few minutes taking Ralph Lauren’s Life in Color Quiz, which accurately paired me up with the fragrance I thought I’d love most! As it turns out, I’m sensual (oooh!), and a romantic at heart who walks to the beat of my own drum. Which honestly, is pretty true! Before I had even completed the quiz, I figured the #2 bottle would allure me the most, so the quiz was pretty darn accurate. (And fun too!)

You too can take the quiz, post to your social media pages and share with a friend—because, every person who takes the quiz has the chance to win a $4,000 Ralph Lauren shopping spree. I’m game for a $4,000 Ralph Lauren shopping spree, aren’t you?

Review & Swatches: Zoya Beach Collection for Summer 2012

I know the first official day of spring was only a few weeks ago, but I have both of the new summer collections from Zoya to show you! First up is the Beach Collection, the second will be posted this week as well—the Surf Collection. Beach has six shades, five of which are cremes, and one is a shimmer. You’ll only see four in the photos, as UPS wasn’t very gentle on my precious cargo! I opened the box to find two broken polish bottles, with polish EVERYWHERE! It took me a while to even get these cleaned up for this post. The two that are missing are raspberry-like cremes (Reagan and Lara), and from what I’ve seen online—they look really pretty. I’m bummed they’re damaged, but I’m so glad these were intact so that I may share them.

Tracie is a shimmering pale grass green. The flow of this one is superb in my opinion, I didn’t experience any streaking—and two coats was perfectly opaque.  [Read more…]

Review & Swatches: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder with Real Cocoa in ‘Milk Chocolate’

I am SUCH a goof. I’m usually so good about paying attention to product details, but this time I slipped up. See that bronzer? When it arrived a few weeks ago with the rest of the Too Faced Summer Collection for 2012, I thought it was the original Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder. So, I wasn’t in a huge rush to get it up—but I was WRONG. This IS a new one! My apologies for not really giving attention to this baby sooner. I even remember telling someone on Twitter that it was the same. Oops! Sorry!

This version of Chocolate Soleil is a lighter version of the original—which will make even the most pasty of girls very happy campers. I happen to be one of those girls, so when I wore this for the first time, I was thrilled with the color. And it’s not exactly summer yet, so I’m all about more subtle color right now anyway. This ‘Milk Chocolate‘ shade is a perfect fit for me—and even better, it smells like cocoa!

Quick Pick Under $10: Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer

I’m a big fan of creating points of light on my face. Not only does it make you look more alive, but it adds subtle contour without going too crazy on products like bronzers and highlighters. Sometimes the placement is wrong, or it’s too dark—and depending on your skin tone, you may wish to create those points of light in less obvious ways. That’s what makes products like the new Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer a real gem. It’s a very forgiving product that adds a little luminosity to the skin, but it’s so whisper soft, only you will know the secret. Everyone else will just compliment how radiant your skin looks!

These don’t really offer a lot of coverage, so if you have dark circles, it likely won’t conceal them. But what it will do, is bounce light out of shallow areas like the corners on your eyes and on the bow of your top lip. There are very soft light-diffusing pigments suspended in a lightweight gel that sheers out, like it’s creating a blanket of light bulbs on your skin.

What’s New: Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara

Do you remember Urban Decay’s original Big Fatty Mascara? It came in a bright psychedelic-looking tube, and had an enormous brush. Other than being able to remember its existence, I don’t recall any memories of wearing it. I’m sure I did, but it was WAY back in my long mascara career. In line with Urban Decay’s ‘everything that’s old is new again‘ theme, Big Fatty also received a major makeover—a new brush, new tube, new formula, the whole nine yards. Check it out…

Urban Decay to Launch a New Eyeshadow Formula!

Oh. Em. Gee.

Did you see the mystery tweets yesterday from your favorite beauty bloggers and Urban Decay marked with the #UD68 hashtag? I heard a knock at the door yesterday afternoon, and it was my handy UPS guy bringing me an exciting box from Urban Decay. Inside the box was a swanky token, an empty eyeshadow component. Whatever it was for, I knew it had to be something GOOD. The box had a very special message written on the inside:

We’re about the blow your mind. Tweet us a photo of your token for more deets. #UD68

I honestly had a hard time concentrating for the day after my tweet. Here’s the Twitpic I posted:

I woke up this morning to the GREAT news! Looks like Urban Decay revamped their eyeshadow single lineup, and I could not be more excited! I haven’t seen any of them in-person yet, but from what I understand—it’s a new formula with a more velvety smooth texture, and it’s more crease resistant. They’ve also added new shades that were previously only available in palettes. As if that weren’t enough, they’ve made it so your can build your own palette with them too!

The Urban Decay addict in me is squealing a little bit inside.

The second I have a chance to try out the eyeshadow formula, you’ll be the first to know! Will you buy any of the new shadows?
