Beauty Quickies: Kate Somerville RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream

Beauty Quickies is a series where I showcase a great product that I haven’t had the opportunity to write a comprehensive review for. These products pass my standards, and I hope you enjoy getting these beauty product stats at-a-glance!

kate somerville RetAsphere

New for 2013, Kate Somerville released RetAsphere, a 2-in-1 Retinol cream for those who need help diminishing the appearance of fine lines and evening out skin texture and tone—but still need plenty of moisture, too. Traditionally, Retinol products irritate the skin, increasing dryness, and adding sensitivity. Kate addressed these skin concerns with this unique night cream that delivers pure Retinol to the skin in a unique carrier lipid, that also brings a surge of moisture in at the same time. This results in a highly effective Retinol, without the usual irritation or flaking.

Inside that carrier lipid is a rich blend of hyaluronic acid and seaweed extract, both of which penetrate the skin—increasing the anti-aging benefits. Here’s a Retinol that most skin types will tolerate more easily, and the benefits are fantastic!

  • Diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and leaves the skin looking and feeling smoother and firmer.
  • Helps increase cell turnover and creates younger-looking skin.

What’s New: Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer Facial Moisturizer

Sending out an S.O.S.

A few weeks ago, I took two cross-country flights in two days. Not only does my skin get seriously dehydrated from flying, it was stressed-out by a total climate change. Now, go ahead and add those two things to also having the kind of situational stress that makes you nervous and sick to your stomach. Yep, that was pretty much me for 48 hours. Speaking on live TV, for the first time ever, three times in two days—I’d say I was stressed. Wouldn’t you? When I was young, I was the one kid in school that was suddenly “sick” on oral book report day.

The day before I left, the latest from Kiehl’s arrived, the Skin Rescuer, and something intuitively told me to pack it—because I was going to have skin that needed rescuing. I was so right.

Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer

According to Cynthia Ackrill, MD and Fellow of The American Institute of Stress:

“Stress is responsible for 70-90% of doctors’ visits—it contributes to, and can even mimic all serious diseases. Its effects are particularly harsh on the skin, causing premature aging and advancing the symptoms of every common skin condition from sensitive skin, to eczema and psoriasis, rosacea, and chronic dry skin.”

So it turns out, it’s not just in our imaginations running wild, stress definitely affects the skin in negative ways. So no wonder why the eczema I have on my eyelid (I KNOW, my poor EYELID), flares up whenever I’m stressed about something. Skin Rescuer is a triple action formula to help break the skin’s stress cycle. At least now there’s something for the rest of my face! This new product helps address the visible signs of internal stress that shows up on the skin. [Read more…]

Lumene Vitamin C+ Illuminating Anti-Age BB Cream SPF 20

When it comes to drugstore BB creams, I’ve found this one from Lumene to be the closest in consistency to its Asian BB cream ancestors. A clear favorite among U.S. BB cream connoisseurs, this gives the coverage of a medium foundation, smooths the skin like a primer, and protects the skin like a skincare product with Vitamin C and an SPF 20. Available in two shades, and retails for $14.99. [Read more…]

Currently Loving: L’Oréal Paris Ideal Moisture Day Lotion SPF 25

You guys, how much are you paying for your daytime moisturizer with SPF? Even drugstore brands can get up there. What if I told you that I found the PERFECT daily moisturizer with SPF, and it’s under $10. Yes, 10 BUCKS. About $6.99 to be exact! L’Oréal Paris just released a line of crazy-affordable skincare basics in their Ideal Collection. Ideal Moisture Day Lotion SPF 25 comes in three formulas; for dry skin, normal skin, and sensitive skin. I have combination skin personally, and I’ve been rocking the normal skin formula without issue.

L’Oréal Paris Ideal Moisture Day Lotion SPF 25 Normal Skin

This lotion is incredibly lightweight, especially for having sunscreen in it, and get this—it’s oil-free. This absorbs into my skin quickly, makes it feel nice and smooth, and doesn’t affect my foundation application. The scent is light, and very pleasant.  [Read more…]

Quick Drugstore Pick: Simple Eye Make-Up Remover Pads

Lately, I’ve been loving the new products from Simple, because they are really just simple. There’s nothing overly complicated about the brand, and it’s pretty streamlined into effective basics. They make full-size facial cleansing wipes, and I have to say that their basic facial cleansing wipes are my favorite from the drugstore. The sheets are nice and soft, generously sized, and they’re gentle to my skin. The good news is, they recently expanded the cleansing wipes line and I’m trying the new ones out (reviews to follow soon). For now—let’s check out their new eye make-up remover pads. The package is so tiny and cute!

These pads are just as soft and gentle to my eyes as the full-size packages. They’re free of alcohol and oil—yet somehow they still do a great job of removing my eye makeup. They have no fragrance or dyes, and they’ve added conditioning Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E. See? I told you they were simple! [Read more…]

Tried & Tested: 5 Facial Exfoliators That Rock

1. Ole Henricksen Power Peel

My current favorite, the Power Peel pairs a powerful punch of physical and alpha hydroxy acid-based exfoliators with a soothing mask in three pouches for a single use (3 steps per peel; scrub, peel, then mask). Each box comes with six perfectly measured treatments, and nothing goes to waste. My favorite part is step 2, the Lemon Strip Peel. I can’t stand a wimpy peel, and the glycolic and lactic acids add a bit of zing, which is then soothed by the Chamomile Comfort mask. My skin is left glowing, bright, and super smooth immediately after one treatment. I liked this one so much, that I actually just purchased another box. (Best if used once weekly.) –$45, sephora.com

2. philosophy Microdelivery Dual-Phase Peel

This oldie but goodie never lets me down! The Microdelivery Peel uses two steps to reveal fresh, smooth skin after just one use. First, you use the physical exfoliator (bicarbonate vitamin C crystals), then activate it with the gel (lactic acid). A slight warming sensation occurs, and you rinse it off after one minute. The results are pretty much undeniable. –$69, sephora.com   [Read more…]

Have Great Skin with Kiehl’s, & Support the Public School of Your Choice through DonorsChoose.org

I love a brand that makes great products, that’s for sure. But a brand that makes great products AND is philanthropic? They have my complete support! With the purchase of a limited edition product, Kiehl’s is making it possible to give $50 to a great cause—education. That’s something we can ALL get behind, right? Here’s how you can reduce fine lines, refine your skin’s texture, and help education programs at local schools at the same time!

I logged onto DonorsChoose.org this morning, and was able to contribute to a special program at my own childhood elementary school, thanks to a generous donation from Kiehl’s. Come to find out, the teacher who is in charge of the program, was my fourth grade teacher from the eighties! Now that’s full-circle if I’ve ever seen it. It made me feel really good. You can participate too! [Read more…]

Check Out Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15, & a Chance to Score a Free Sample!

New from Simple…

For about two weeks, I’ve been using the latest moisturizer from Simple, the Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15, and I’m happy to report that I’ve been quite satisfied with it. Simple landed here in the states last year, with an outlook that’s a little different than most drugstore products. All Simple products are free of dyes, artificial perfumes, and harsh irritants. They’re hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and pH balanced. Music to many of your ears, I’m sure!

Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15

I wouldn’t consider myself someone with sensitive skin, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t appreciated this great hydrator! I love that it’s oil-free, and that it absorbs super quickly. A lot of products with sunscreen tend to feel heavy or greasy on my skin, and I don’t have that problem at all with the Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15. It really lives up to its name! For being so light, it still feels creamy—which is something I was worried about—because it doesn’t feel like it’s lacking anything at all. Plus, it doesn’t interfere with my makeup, so my skin is pretty satisfied. [Read more…]
