Exclusive Q&A with Neutrogena’s Gabrielle Union on Her Beauty Routine & UV Protection

gabrielle union neutrogena

This morning, I was FLOORED when I read this on cnn.com:

Until today, the surgeon general has never said, ‘UV radiation is bad for you; protect your skin’, acting Surgeon General Dr. Boris Lushniak said.

I have to wonder how many lives would have been saved if UV protection were taken as seriously during other decades, as it’s taken today. [Read more...]

A Cautionary Tale About UVA Rays Through Car Windows

man with sun damage on one side of face

In the past few years, I’ve seen this photo circulating the Internet about a man with insane sun damage on the left side of his face because he never wore sunscreen during his 28-year career as a truck driver. The result: excessive thickening and wrinkling of his skin from his photodamage.

I wanted to share this with you because last night during my insomnia, I stumbled across an interesting article on Beauty High regarding this particular man, and they had read the results of the case study from the New England Journal of Medicine[Read more...]

5 Easy Steps for Healthy Winter Skin

snow

Many people think that just because summer is long gone, they can slack off in the sunscreen department. This is simply not true! Often, the winter rays are even worse for skin, especially once they reflect off of the snow and onto your face. But how do you keep yourself protected since it’s not exactly necessary to apply thick, waterproof sunscreens this season?

nivea cold weather must-haves

Not only can UV rays be stronger in the winter, but your skin can be at its driest and most sensitive. Here are a few tips that will not only make your skin more comfortable this season, but will also keep it protected.

  • Regularly exfoliate — Gentle, regular exfoliation is great for removing the itchiest of dry skin. It will also help your skincare products work more effectively. Your moisturizers can do their best work!
  • Take shorter, less hot showers — I’ll be the first one to admit I love a steaming, hot shower when it’s cold, but it also strips the skin of essential moisture, leaving your skin even dryer than it already was. Turn down the temperature, and take a shorter shower or bath.
  • Multi-task with your daytime moisturizers — For daytime, try switching up your routine with Eucerin’s Daily Protection line of moisturizers for face and body. These gentle, effective formulas offer both daily broad-spectrum UV protection and deep hydration, with a lightweight feel. Great for even those with sensitive skin, I recommend Eucerin’s  Moisturizing Face Lotion with SPF 30, and Daily Protection Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15 for the body.
  • Avoid dry, chapped lips — Just like you’re multi-tasking with your skincare products, do the same for your lips. Try NIVEA’s “A Kiss of” line of lipcare products. They offer UV protection and comforting moisture to even the driest of lips. My favorites—A Kiss of Cherry with SPF 10, and A Kiss of Strawberry with SPF 10. They also offer a slight tint to the lips, bonus!
  • Switch to more mild soaps — Detergents and soaps can strip your skin of essential oils. Change your laundry detergent and body washes to sensitive skin formulas!

What are some of your winter skincare tips?

Best of Summer: Sunscreens

Best of summer sunscreens

Chances are, you’ve already gone through one or more bottles of sunscreen this summer—and that’s a good thing! It means you’re out enjoying what makes summer so great, and you’re also protecting your skin as you should. Whether you’re ready to buy a new bottle, or need one for a mid-summer outdoor activity, here are eight of our favorite sunscreens we’ve found so far this summer.

If experts agree on one thing, it’s that sunscreen is the most important step in reducing your risk of skin cancer. Dr. Richie Lin, of Short Hills Dermatology takes it a step further and tells us…

  • No sunscreen is truly “waterproof” or “sweatproof,” since all sunblocks will dissolve in water eventually. In fact, these labels will soon be a thing of the past since the FDA has ruled that only the term “water-resistant,” with a time limit, can be used on a label. If you are swimming, exercising, or even just sweating from a day of walking around, you should reapply your sunscreen every 1-2 hours for continued protection.
  • Sunscreens with an SPF below 15 do not protect against skin cancer or premature aging. The FDA will now require these products to state that they only protect against sunburns, but not against the carcinogenic effects of the sun. Make sure you pick a sunscreen with enough SPF.
  • Swim shirts and brimmed hats with UV protection are very popular right now. You see every toddler and young child at the pool or beach wearing them. If adults are mindful enough to protect their children from large doses of sun exposure, shouldn’t the same rules apply to big people? Protecting yourself with a swim coverup that contains SPF and a wide-brimmed hat means you will be stylish and safe at the beach!

No-Ad SPF 45 Sunscreen Lotion

It’s true—just because a sunscreen is more expensive, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily better in the protection department. More expensive sunscreens might have special skincare ingredients aside from the protection factor which can often make them more expensive, but a lot of that price reflects the cost of the marketing. No-Ad has been providing effective suncare solutions since 1962 on a more affordable level, since they skip advertising altogether. The result is a budget-friendly choice that still scores high in ratings by leading consumer publications. $9.99, drugstore.com

L’Oréal Paris REVITALIFT Miracle Blur Instant Skin Smoother Finishing Cream Review, Photos

Unless you’re a lucky twenty-something, it seems like most of us are looking for the fountain of youth. Living well and taking of yourself, with an emphasis on great skincare seems to be most of the answer, but it doesn’t hurt when there’s a fab beauty product to help make the job a little easier, right? That’s where this new little ditty from L’Oréal Paris fits in, the REVITALIFT Miracle Blur Instant Skin Smoother Finishing Cream. Because who doesn’t want instantly smoother skin?

I’ve got plenty of enlarged pores, and some fine line lines that could use a little smoothing—and did I mention I’m thirty-something? I’m a perfect fit for this product. So let’s see how it did!

REVITALIFT Miracle Blur

REVITALIFT Miracle Blur was inspired by the science of optical skincare, and it utilizes new “Opti-Blur Technology” to diffuse light in millions of directions to instantly erase the look of lines, wrinkles and pores. This provides instant skin gratification by “blurring” away fine lines, wrinkles and pores for a virtually flawless-looking complexion in about 30 seconds. In addition to the product’s instant results, Miracle Blur was formulated with broad-spectrum SPF 30 to protect skin from future damage caused by harmful UVA/UVB rays. That SPF 30 factor was huge for me, because I don’t think I own any other primers/optical diffusers that have a protection factor that high. Score one for me! [Read more...]

Review: Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 50

You had me at SPF 50. If you know anything about me, I’m a sucker for sun protection.  After 2 weeks, this product has knocked my socks off.

Wear it alone, blend it with moisturizer, or try it mixed with your foundation—Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster has got you covered! I love this stuff because so many times I find a daytime lotion I love, but it lacks SPF. Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster can help fill in those gaps.

It doesn’t just protect your skin from sunburn, it contains UV Smart Booster Technology—which means it also protects your skin from free radicals. Dermalogica has encapsulated essential antioxidants vitamins C and E into a microcapsule that activates only when needed. So that means when your skin gets exposed to harmful UV rays, this stuff kicks into overtime to add extra protection.  [Read more...]

Review: Dermalogica AGESmart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30

Editor’s note: Dilara, my favorite pal and mid-western chick checks in with how some of my fave beauty products perform in her part of the country. I hope you like her findings as much a I do!  Because Dilara RULES.–Amber

Dermalogica AGESmart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30

A primer is like underwear for your skin. If it is the right kind, you look your best. Dermalogica created AGE Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 to ensure your skin will always look its best.

I loved the way this product smoothed and conditioned my skin almost immediately after applying it. Since it’s tinted, I decided to skip my moisturizer every time I used it and didn’t feel like I missed a beat. Add SPF 30 into the mix and I was thinking this could pretty much do it all.

AGE Smart SkinPerfect Primer contains a potent mix of white tea, peptides and Sodium Hyaluronate to protect skin from further damage while helping replenish skin’s collagen levels and help hydrate skin. Silica, Pearl Powder and Soy Protein work together to smooth and even skin tone.  Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create the one-two punch to protect skin from harmful UV exposure.  If you’re thinking your skin could use some underwear, I highly suggest Dermalogica AGE Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30.

Bottom Line…

Smoothes skin, evens tone, protects from the sun—this product does it all.

6 Tips to Practice ‘Safer’ Sun & Maintain Your Faux Glow

Swim Week dominated Miami last week, with glamazon runway models and fashion lovers alike flocking to the beach for a week of gorgeous swimwear, and even more gorgeous sun-kissed bodies. I’m hearing we’ll see the return of the high waist (not sure if I’m crazy about that idea), and the rise of the sexy bikini—which is always in style. What’s also always in style? Healthy skin. Who better to look to than the team of stylists backstage at the Mara Hoffman Swim Resort 2013 show for tips to achieve the best bronze possible—while still practicing safer sun?

  • Protect your skin by applying a luxurious amount of sunscreen. Stylists used Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration lotion sunscreen to prep the models’ skin. With hydrating ribbons infused with luxurious silk proteins and rich shea butter, Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration lotion sunscreen pampers and protects skin when in the sun, providing 12-hour moisturization while still providing safe and effective broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.
  • Your face requires about a teaspoon of sunscreen for the best coverage, while your arms and legs require about a tablespoon. Adjust accordingly for the torso. For maximum protection, wait for it to soak in (15 to 30 minutes) before indulging in the sun.
  • Reapply sunscreen often, at least every two hours. Sweating, swimming, and towel drying can remove sunscreen from your skin’s surface, so be sure to reapply when needed. [Read more...]
