I love a good matte lipstick, and thankfully there are a few in the MAC Retro Matte Collection. These new shades have the same signature finish as the highly touted Ruby Woo (which I’ve been wearing for years), and last on my lips much longer than the average lipstick. Normally I’m stuck retouching every 3-4 hours, but with these Retro Mattes, I can get 6-7 hours of wear. Pretty impressive! On the flip side, these babies can be a little drying. They’re not quite as drying as other mattes I own, but I still experience it to a lesser degree.
Steady Going, Runway Hit, Dangerous, Relentlessly Red
Another positive—even though they’re a little stiff and dry, they seem to glide on a little smoother than other mattes, but I still have to use my lip brush for detailing my lip line. I usually don’t wear lip liner, but there are corresponding Retro Matte Lip Liner shades for those lip lining beauty buffs out there. Let’s take a closer look!
There are eight shades available, although seven are pictured in this post.
- Steady Going — light pink matte
- Runway Hit — light nude matte
- Dangerous — orange-red matte
- Relentlessly Red — bright pink coral matte
- All Fired Up — bright fuchsia matte
- Flat Out Fabulous — bright plum matte
- Ruby Woo — vivid blue red matte (not pictured)
- Fixed on Drama — rich wine matte
Exfoliating your lips is key when wearing any matte lipstick, so it’s almost a necessity before applying these. Even though I exfoliated, I still had issues with a few of the shades—predominantly Steady Going and Fixed On Drama. In all honesty, those were my two least favorites in the collection because not only did I have to apply a few layers to stop them from looking so patchy, I thought they were the most drying. Coincidence? My favorites were Runway Hit, All Fired Up, and Relentlessly Red. Those would be my must haves! If you don’t have it already, Ruby Woo is one of the best reds ever, so you may want to consider that as well. It’s part of the permanent line though, so no rush.

A beautiful collection, but a few shades aren’t as easy to wear as others; they’re a little stiff and can be patchy when applied, so you may have to layer. Watch out for dryness with these matte lipsticks. Make sure to exfoliate before, and apply lip balm after removal!
