You might remember that last week, the announcement was made that Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick formula is going away to make way for an impressive array of 100 shades with six finishes, called the VICE Lipsticks. In June, they’re set to release the new formula, which has aloe vera, jojoba, avocado, babassu oil, and Illipe butter to prevent against dryness, add moisture, and provide comfort. First, let’s take a look at the finishes that you’ll be able to choose from!
- Mega Matte — super intense matte
- Comfort Matte — their creamiest matte
- Cream — the original creamy luxury formula
- Metallized — cream with a high level of pearl pigments
- Sheer — a punch of color, with a sheer, shiny finish
- Sheer Shimmer — slightly transparent finish with floating pearl and a smooth texture
Guys, I can’t help but think that Urban Decay is coming for the lipstick industry with this release, and I hope they’re ready — because 100 shades with six finishes — and a lowered price point at $17 is going to put them on the MEGA lip color map. UD is already known for SO many great products in the industry, that I can’t help but think that by “reinventing the wheel” here with one of their biggest launches ever — it was a very brave and ambitious decision. I was a huge fan of the Revolution formula. Now with VICE, we’re on to something!
I haven’t tried all 100 — that would take me a few months! But I do have Wende’s 10 Top Picks. (Wende Zomnir is the brand’s co-founder and Chief Creative Officer.) I test drove them for a few days, and here’s what I think!
I love the selection of bold brights, darker, sexier shades, and a nice mix of neutrals. And the FINISHES! I’m so happy to see Comfort Mattes, and Mega Mattes, for my lovelies that just cannot get enough matte in their lives. The Cream formula reminds me of the original cream formula of the Revolution formula (that’s not to say they’re the same), but the Metallized formula is so different than anything I’ve seen from UD, and so cool.
As far as my personal fave, I’m an avid lover of the Comfort Matte formula. I am able to wear it without excess dryness for over 4-5 hours, and it has stayed put for me. Especially Menace — I have to say that’s my fave shade from Wende’s 10 Top Picks, with a close second at 714 (which was released with the Gwen Stefani collection.)
In terms of wear, I get the longest wear out of the mattes and comfort mattes. The matte formula in Pandemonium (it’s a mega matte) was a little drying at about 4 hours of wear before it became a little spotty. But the comfort matte formula in Menace wore for over 4+ hours for me, with minimal dryness for a matte, and the color was really anchored on, leaving behind a pretty magenta stain when it was all said and done.
The packaging is a nod to the vintage tubes that originally looked a little bit like bullets. I like that they kept the cap of the Revolution lipsticks as a throwback, and also that the bottom is gold. This packaging doesn’t have as much weight to it as Revolution, but I’m totally okay with that. Especially given that it’s $5 less than Revolution. And that’s not to say I think the packaging looks cheap either — I think it was a fair trade off. A nod to the old-school fans, while saving money. YESSSSS!
Also on the way are are 50 new 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils. Keep your eye out for those too.
